A pair of Thomas Jefferson wrestlers took the first of three steps toward their ultimate goal of walking away with a state championship.

Zeke Nistrian and K.W. Williams won weight class titles at Saturday’s South Puget Sound League North Division Sub-regional at Auburn High School. Nistrian and Williams, along with several other district wrestlers, now advance to the Regional Tournament next Saturday and, hopefully, to the Mat Classic inside the Tacoma Dome.

The other regional qualifier from Jefferson is Ty Zumwalt, who finished fourth at 145. Jake Polzak will be an alternate after finishing fifth at 152.

A trio of Federal Way High School girls also took home individual championships Saturday at the SPSL Sub-regional, which was also held at Auburn High School.

Bianca Arizpe won the 112-pound championship, Maria Manzueta took home the 119-pound title and senior Jocie Weinberger dominated the 130-pound championship. The threesome helped the Eagles finish in second place in the team standings behind Emerald Ridge.

Arizpe won both of her matches at the Sub-regional by pin, including a 43 second fall over Federal Way teammate Victoria Pena in the championship match.

Manzueta also dominated in the 119-pound bracket. The senior won her first match by pin, beat Bethel’s Allie LaFountain, 13-3, in the semifinals and decisioned Kentwood’s Cassidy Meyers in the championship, 12-6. Federal Way junior Axa Molina finished third in the weight class.

Weinberger, who has finished second at the last two state girls wrestling tournaments, won both her matches at 130 pounds. Weinberger pinned Curtis’ Andrea Alonzo in the semifinals and beat Emerald Ridge’s Jennifer Anderson in the championship, 11-4.

Jefferson’s Alexis Conrad lost in the championship in the 160-pound bracket to Rogers’ Jessy Christensen. Other placers from Federal Way include Beamer’s Lulu Kemman, who finished up in third place at 152 pounds, and Federal Way’s Jacklyn Baules was third at 160.

The girls will now move on to the Regional Tournament in Shelton on Saturday.

SPSL South Sub-regional

The Todd Beamer Titans will be well-represented at next weekend’s Regional Tournament. Six wrestlers will move on after finishing in the top-four at the SPSL South Sub-regional Saturday at Graham-Kapowsin High School.

The Titans got second-place finishes from five different wrestlers, who all lost in championship matches.

Tre Uson lost in the 112-pound championship, Ares Carpio finished second at 125, Deshar House was second at 130, Aron Set-Heit lost in the 135-pound title match and 145-pounder Lance Gibson had to injury default in the championship. Freshman Brett Dykman finished up in fourth place at 112.

Carpio, who won the 119-pound state championship last year, lost to Rogers’ junior Joey Palmer, 4-3, Saturday. That is a turnaround from last year’s state title match, where Carpio beat Palmer.

Federal Way will be represented at regionals by 160-pounder Joseph Coronell. The senior finished up in third place.

SPSL 3A Sub-regional

The Decatur Gators finished up in third place as a team at the SPSL 3A Sub-regional at Auburn Mountainview Friday and Saturday. Enumclaw won the title, followed by Bonney Lake.

The Gators got second-place finishes from Rad Krysa at 119, Nick Karis at 160, Rowland Gaydosh at 171 and Kyle Gleed at 285 pounds. Decatur’s Trysten Dawson finished third at 103, Nick Lindholm was third at 125, Brandon Zimmerman was third at 145 and James Bagley finished third at 215. Justin Hartinger, Robert Harris and Damian Battles all finished fourth.
