Wrestling: TJ’s McIntosh, Decatur’s Aparis and four FW girls win SPSL sub-regional titles Saturday

Thomas Jefferson’s Kyle McIntosh continued his impressive senior season for the Raiders Saturday.

The 145-pounder dominated his bracket at the 2010 South Puget Sound League North Division sub-regional wrestling tournament at Kent-Meridian High School. McIntosh, who has lost just once this season, finished 4-0 at the tournament and pinned Kentlake’s Sean Cavanaugh in the championship match in 5:10. McIntosh finished fifth at 140 pounds during last year’s Mat Classic.

But the at the SPSL North sub-regional tournament was the Tahoma Bears. Tahoma won the tournament title for the first time since 1998, and will sent 11 wrestlers to Saturday’s Region I tournament at Auburn High School. Auburn finished second and Kentwood ended up third. The Raiders finished seventh and Federal Way was ninth at Kent-Meridian.

Despite the rather low finish at the sub-regional tournament, the Raiders will be well-represented at regionals. Three TJ wrestlers competed in championship matches Saturday. Other Jefferson finalists were Ivan Mukomol at 135 and K.W. Williams at 189.

Mukomol, who also wrestled at the state tournament last year, lost a heart-breaking 5-3 decision to Tahoma’s Jordan Higa in the 135-pound championship match. Mukomol cruised into the title match with a pin and a technical fall in his opening two matches.

Williams also ran into a Tahoma wrestler in the 189-pound championship. Nick Bayer pinned the TJ sophomore in 3:27 to claim the division title.

The Raiders also advanced 112-pounder Mike Roybal and 160-pounder Paul Johnson to the regional tournament. Roybal finished fourth and Johnson was third in their weight classes.

Federal Way’s Levy Molina will be the lone Eagle at regionals, after the senior finished fourth at 140 pounds.

SPSL South sub-regional tournament

Beamer and Decatur will be well-represented at Saturday’s Region 2 Tournament, which will be held at Beamer and include teams from the SPSL South and KingCo.

The Titans will be sending eight wrestlers and the Gators will have seven at regionals after impressive performances at Saturday’s SPSL South Division sub-regional tournament at Graham-Kapowsin High School.

Decatur’s Dylan Aparis won the only weight division championship, helping the Gators to a third-place team finish. Aparis pinned Graham-Kapowsin’s Dylan Evanger in the 152-pound final.

The Gators had three other finalists Saturday, but all three lost to Graham-Kapowsin wrestlers. Jerry Doran lost in the 135-pound final to Grant Steen, 10-2, Eric Godfrey lost 7-0 to Dalton Evanger at 140 and freshman Nick Karis was pinned by Cameron Stickell at 145.

Graham-Kapowsin dominated the South sub-regional. The Eagles won with 351 points, well ahead of Rogers (299) and Decatur (223.5). Graham-Kapowsin had six individual champs.

Just like Decatur, the Titans also qualified four wrestlers to championship matches. But the Titans dropped all four. Tre Uson lost to Rogers’ Bryce Evans at 112, 9-0, Ares Carpio lost to Rogers’ Joey Palmer at 119, 6-5, Aron Set-Heit lost to Graham-Kapowsin’s Grant Steen at 130, injury default, and 160-pounder Ben Draeger lost to Emerald Ridge’s James Souza at 160, 4-0.

Mike Bressler of Decatur was named SPSL South coach of the year and Lakota’s Dallas Harwood was named junior high coach of the year.

SPSL Girls Tournament

The Federal Way Eagles dominated the lower weights Saturday at the SPSL 4A Girls Wrestling Tournament Saturday at Graham-Kapowsin High School.

The Eagles won four of the first five weight classes and finished in third place as a team with 122.5 points. Rogers (194) won the team title, followed by Emerald Ridge (154.5).

Federal Way’s titles came from Kaylee Harris at 103 pounds, Bianca Arizpe at 112, Maria Manzueta at 119 and Jocie Weinberger at 130.

Harris and Weinberger both won their respective title matches by pins. Harris’ came 2:15 into the match against Rogers’ Kendra Smith and Weinberger pinned Emerald Ridge’s Sabrina Collins in just 1:34.

Arizpe dominated Meghan Kajca from Emerald Ridge, winning by technical fall (15-0) and Manzueta won a rugged 9-5 decision over Kentwood’s Cassidy Meyers in the best match of the day.

The wrestlers advance to Saturday’s regional tournament at Emerald Ridge High School, where the top six in each weight class advance to the state tournament.
