The “Big Three” on the Decatur High School wrestling team proved to be the best the South Puget Sound League has to offer.

Juniors Nick Karis, Rowland Gaydosh and Kyle Gleed won their respective weight classes at the prestigious SPSL Championships Thursday and Friday at Auburn High School. The tournament featured wrestlers from the 18 high schools from the Class 4A SPSL North and South divisions, six schools from the SPSL 3A division and eight from the SPSL 2A. Each weight class included a grand total of 32 wrestlers.

Karis rolled through the 160-pound bracket during the SPSL Championships. Karis beat up Spanaway Lake’s Zack Bickford in the title match, 20-4. Karis’ road to the championship started with a 1:24 pin of Peninsula’s Luke Holsinger and followed with a 2:58 pin of Kent-Meridian’s Archie Biawogee in the second round.

Karis then won a 16-1 decision over Enumclaw’s Ryan Anderson in the quarterfinals and beat Bonney Lake’s Chili Sabin, 8-4, in the 160-pound semifinal. Karis is currently the second-ranked Class 3A 160-pounder in the state, according to washingtonwrestlingreport.com. Mercer Island’s Blake Johnson, who handed Karis his only loss of the season in the title match at the Hammerhead Invitational last month, tops the rankings.

Gaydosh has also been ultra-impressive during the early part of the season.  He is also the second-ranked 3A wrestler in his weight class, according to washingtonwrestlingreport.com.

The 170-pound junior had a little tougher bracket than Karis during the SPSL Championships. Gaydosh won a 6-3 decision over Tahoma’s Gene Autrey in the title match.

But Gaydosh’s toughest match might have come in the semifinals, where he beat Bonney Lake’s Jake Lueders, 8-6. Gaydosh also beat Jefferson’s Jake Polsak in his opener, 15-4, Washington’s Ramsey Davis in the second round, 5:20 pin, and Rogers’ Zane Bowen in the quarterfinals, 12-8.

Gleed dominated the 285-pound bracket during the two-day tournament. The junior put together four-straight pins, including a 2:40 fall over Federal Way’s Jessi Leifi in the championship.

Gleed also pinned Auburn Riverside’s Larkin Williams (1:56), Kentwood’s Matthew Herrick (5:05) and Puyallup’s Trent Nivala (1:03).

In a mild upset, Jefferson senior K.W. Williams lost his first match of the year in the 195-pound championship to Curtis’ Kadyn Del Toro, 3-1. The pair are the two top-ranked wrestlers in any class at 195 pounds, according to washingtonwrestlingreport.com. Williams, who lost in the 189-pound state title match a season ago, earned his way into the SPSL championship with three-straight pins in preliminary rounds.

Beamer’s Brett Dykman also lost in the SPSL title match at 113 pounds. Bonney Lake’s Colton Tracy beat Dykman, 7-2, in the championship after winning a 7-6 decision over Lakes’ Andrew Ramirez in the semifinals.
