WRESTLING: Decatur finishes third at All-SPSL Tournament, Karis tops at 170

The amount of wrestling talent that packed Auburn High School over the weekend was staggering, rivaled only by the Mat Classic. The All-South Puget Sound League Wrestling Tournament included 25 schools from the Class 4A, 3A and 2A divisions of the SPSL. The tournament also featured the defending Class 4A team title winners, Tahoma, along with the 3A champs, Enumclaw, and several individual state champions.

The amount of wrestling talent that packed Auburn High School over the weekend was staggering, rivaled only by the Mat Classic. The All-South Puget Sound League Wrestling Tournament included 25 schools from the Class 4A, 3A and 2A divisions of the SPSL. The tournament also featured the defending Class 4A team title winners, Tahoma, along with the 3A champs, Enumclaw, and several individual state title holders.

Tahoma ended up winning the team title at the All-SPSL Tournament, which concluded Saturday at Auburn with 251.5 points. Enumclaw ended up in second place and the Decatur Gators, who entered the two-day tournament as the top-ranked 3A team in the state, were third with 176.5 points.

The Gators got one individual championship Saturday at Auburn. Senior Nick Karis, who was the runner-up at last year’s state tournament, dominated the 170-pound bracket, beating Steilacoom’s John Santos in the championship, 14-1.

Karis, who has just one loss this season, rolled into the title match with three-straight pins during his early-tournament contests. Karis needed just 1:42 to beat Bethel’s Derek Fry in his opener and 2:37 to pin Graham-Kapowsin’s Jacob Stickell in the quarterfinals. Karis then pinned Enumclaw’s Falani Gill in the semifinals in 4:21.

Karis was joined in the championship round by senior teammate Rowland Gaydosh. The 195-pounder, who also finished second at last year’s Mat Classic, cruised into the 195-pound title match, where he was to face Graham-Kapowsin’s Joe Gomez. But Gaydosh was unable to wrestle in the championship match because of an injury sustained in his 5-2 semifinal win over Puyallup’s Joey Meyer. Gaydosh also pinned Sumner’s Justin Myers in 1:22 and Steilacoom’s Jordan Leech in 1:09 during his preliminary rounds.

Federal Way and Beamer also had wrestlers advance into the championship matches in their respective weight classes.

Eagle freshman Alex Davidson lost to Kentlake’s Nick Smith in the 106-pound title match, 5-1, and Beamer’s Brett Dykman lost to Orting’s Fred Green at 113 pounds. Beamer finished in 18th-place overall in the team standings and Federal Way was 24th. Jefferson ended up in 22nd place, but didn’t have any wrestlers finish in the top-four in their weight classes.

Decatur also had a pair of wrestlers snag third-place finishes at the All-SPSL Tournament — Trysten Dawson and Kyle Gleed.

Dawson lost in the quarterfinals to eventual 113-pound champ, Orting’s Fred Green, before winning four matches in the a row in the consolation bracket. Dawson pinned Enumclaw’s Hunter Haney in the third/fourth match in 3:49. Gleed lost a heart-breaker in the 285-pound semifinals to Tahoma’s Edwin Torres, 4-3, before battling back to win a 4-0 decision over Auburn Riverside’s Larkin Williams in the third/fourth match.
