It wasn’t as easy as everybody thought it would be for the Federal Way High School track and field teams. But both the Eagle boys and girls won titles at the Class 4A West Central/Southwest District Championships, held Friday and Saturday at Kent’s French Field.
The Eagle boys, who entered the postseason as the prohibitive favorites to win the state team title, struggled with injuries. Their state-championship caliber 4×100 relay team was disqualified during a preliminary heat during the district meet. But, to illustrate the amount of depth on Sam Beesley’s roster, Federal Way still ran away with the district championship with 105.5 points. Gig Harbor finished in a distant second-place with 77 points.
In total, the Eagles had 10 individuals qualify for the Class 4A State Track and Field Meet, which kicks off tonight (Thursday) at Tacoma’s Mount Tahoma High School. The meet will run through Saturday.
Beamer will be represented in Tacoma by Jamare Davis (400 meters) and Adrian Shocks (triple jump), along with its 4×400 relay team. Jefferson’s Yohan Gebrehiwet (800) will be the lone Raider at state and Decatur’s contingent at the 3A meet will be Noel Maafala (shot put) and Kevin Young (long jump).
On the girls’ side, the Eagles also used their depth to take the district team championship with 65.5 points. Federal Way finished just in front of the Curtis Vikings (62), the defending Class 4A state champions, and Gig Harbor (61).The Eagles qualified five individuals, along with a pair of relay teams, for the state meet.
The Federal Way boys picked up five individual district championships, including a pair from senior Ezekiel McNeal in the 100 meters (10.82) and 200 (22.01). Other event victories came from Keenan Curran in the triple jump (45-11.5), Albert Havili in the discus (167-1) and freshman Tyson Penn in the high jump (6-4).
Federal Way also got a second-place finish from D’Londo Tucker in the high jump (6-2) and third-place finishes from McNeal in the 400 (48.77), Tremaine Rambo in the 800 (1:56.32), and Mitch Stewart in the 1600 (4:18.51).
Other Eagle qualifiers were Mike Tate (long jump), Jason Palmer (400), Aaron Persinger (110 and 300 hurdles), Jared Pulu (shot put), Mathias Forward (pole vault) and Mitch Stewart (1,600).
Stewart will be attempting a rare double this weekend. The junior will run in the final in the 1,600 tonight and then make the four-hour drive to the Tri-Cities to defend his Class 4A singles’ state championship.
On the girls’ side, the Eagles got only one individual district championship from sophomore Mariyah Vongseveng in the 300 hurdles in a time of 44.67. Vongseveng won the 4A title in the same event last season as a ninth-grader. But Federal Way also swept the 4×100 and 4×200 relays Saturday in Kent. The foursome of Gab Pelogi, Ta’Mara Richey, Kris Cameron and Vongseveng teamed up to win both events.
Vongseveng also finished second in the 100 hurdles, Pelogi was third in the 100 (12.64), and Richey finished second in the triple jump (36-7.5) and fourth in the long jump (17-8).
Other Federal Way state qualifiers were Julian Johnson (800), Audrey Shin (high jump) and Ta’Mara Richey (long jump, triple jump).
The Beamer girls were led by Chante Sposter, who won the district title in the 400 meters in 57.04. Sposter’s time during Friday’s qualifying session (56.02) was the second-best 400 in Class 4A this season, behind Kamiakin’s Elie Heiden (55.26). She will be Beamer’s lone female representative at state.
Jefferson’s Cheryl Hong finished third in the 400 (59.45). Jefferson also got top-three placings from Kaya Warrior in the discus (second, 119-10) and shot put (fourth, 37-11), and Montana Pellegrini in the pole vault (third, 10-0). Allison Arthur also qualified for the state meet in the pole vault with a fourth-place finish.
The Decatur girls will also have a large presence at the 3A state meet. Anna Paradee (100 hurdles, pole vault), Ericka Budinich (100, long jump), Leah Johnson (100), Jenalta Yates (400) and Parris Watson (discus), along with all three relay teams will be in Tacoma.
