A pair of South Puget Sound League Central Division track and field championships were won at Thomas Jefferson High School Wednesday afternoon.
The Federal Way boys and TJ girls both finished unbeaten in the SPSL Central with victories Wednesday in their regular season finales. The Eagle boys beat the Raiders, 124-21, and the Jefferson girls downed Federal Way, 101-49. Both finished with 5-0 records in the division, which also includes Auburn, Auburn Riverside and Curtis.
The perfect season was the second straight by the Eagle boys in the SPSL Central and fourth in a row overall. Federal Way went unbeaten in the SPSL North during the 2008 and 2009 seasons, as well.
Federal Way won all but two events during the dual meet at TJ. Michael Tate and Meron Simon won a pair of events for the extremely deep Eagles. Tate won the 400 meters in 51.37 and the long jump (20-8) and Simon took the 800 (1:58.04) and 1,600 (4:16.94).
Federal Way’s other wins came from D’londo Tucker in the triple jump (42-9), Matthew Chun in the pole vault (13-6), Johnny Myles (6-0), DJ Vollmer in the javelin (142-11), Albert Havili in the discus (151-10), Jordan Pulu in the shot put (47-1 1/2), Aaron Persinger in the 300 hurdles (40.9), Garrett Persinger in the 110 hurdles (16.2) and DJ May in the 200 (22.52).
Jefferson’s two victories came from Aaron Jeong in the 100 (10.92) and Chase Braxmeyer in the 3,200 (9:52.27).
On the girls’ side, the Raiders got four individual wins from Lindsey Dahl. The junior won the triple jump (35-8), javelin (121-11), 300 hurdles (48.27) and 100 hurdles (16.93).
Jefferson’s other event victories came from Kayla Adams in the shot put (41-10) and discus (128-5), Nicolette Carnahan in the 100 (12.93), Cheryl Hong in the 200 (26.53), Courtney Walker in the high jump (4-6) and Montana Pellegrini in the pole vault (10-6). Pellegrini’s vault broke her previous Jefferson all-time school record.
Next up for the track teams is the postseason, which kicks off Wednesday, May 11 at the SPSL Meet at French Field in Kent. The league meet continues on May 13.
Beamer
The Titans swept the Curtis Vikings Wednesday in their SPSL Central Division finales. The Beamer boys won, 82-54, and the girls beat the Vikings, 76-64. The boys finished 5-2, which was good for third place in the tough Central Division and the girls finished 4-3 overall, which tied for third.
On the boys’ side, Beamer’s Austin Hitchcock swept the hurdles. Hitchcock won the 110 hurdles in 16.29 and the 300 hurdles in 40.05. Beamer’s other wins came form Shawn Priggett in the 100 (11.3), Kenny Pickens in the 400 (52.85), Garth Ward in the 1,600 (4:43.84) and Mike Riedel in the shot put (41-9).
On the girls’ side, the Titans got three individual wins from Kiernan Reitz in the 100 hurdles (17.03), the 300 hurdles (57.39) and the pole vault (9-0). Constance Kuhnly won both the shot put (28-4 1/2) and discus (98-1), Lauren Thomas won the 800 (2:33.63) and 1,600 (5:51.26) and Miranda Vaara won the high jump (5-0).
