The Decatur girls golf team won a showdown between two of the better squads in the South Puget Sound League Tuesday against the Thomas Jefferson Raiders to wrap up the SPSL title.
The 73-54 win at the Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club kept the Gators unbeaten on the season.
Decatur moved to 9-0 with the victory and scored over 70 team points for the sixth time during the season. The win was the Gators’ second over the Raiders during the year. Jefferson finished unbeaten in the SPSL last season, while Decatur was just 1-7.
The Gators were led by the 2-over par, 38 by sophomore Stacey Blunt, who tied with TJ’s Jayme Carbon for medalist honors. Decatur freshman Amanda Beyke shot a 44 and Samantha Zeeb fired a 45.
The golf postseason kicks off on Oct. 22 with the Class 4A Medalist Tournament at the Gold Mountain Golf Course in Port Orchard. The Medalist Tournament will be followed by the state-qualifying tournament on Oct. 22. The Class 4A State Tournament will be held in the spring.
The Todd Beamer boys downed Curtis Tuesday, 80-71, at the Sumner Meadows Golf Course thanks to a 1-under, 35 by Broc Johnson, who finished second at last year’s Class 4A State Tournament.
The Jefferson boys beat Decatur Tuesday, 86-57, at the Riverbend Golf Course. Sean Carroll earned medalist honors with a 37, followed by Quinn Hildebrandt’s 38 and Charles Lee’s 39. Decatur was led by a 42 by Matt Parker.
Cross country
The Todd Beamer cross country teams swept their meets Wednesday against Puyallup and Graham-Kapowsin.
The girls edged Puyallup, 21-38, and beat Graham-Kapowsin, 18-45. The Titans were led by the running of freshman Sara Mussa, who won the 2.75-mile rave at Wildwood Park in a time of 17:06. Teammate Taylor Kartes finished second in 17:41. Grace Mussa finished in fourth-place overall in a time of 18:25.
On the boys’ side, the Titans beat Puyallup, 26-29, and beat Graham-Kapowsin, 15-49. Beamer was led by the third-place finish of Keegan Claxton in 15:04. Jacob Wittman ended up fourth in 15:06.
The Jefferson girls dropped their second meet of the season Wednesday to the Tahoma Bears, 26-39, while beating Kentlake, 15-50. The Raiders, who have won the last six SPSL championships, lost to Auburn Riverside earlier in the year.
Jefferson was led by the second-place finish of Vanessa Bennum in a time of 19:59 over the 5,000-meter course at TJ. Camryn Patrick finished third in 20:06 and Lacey Printz was fourth in 20:13.
On the boys’ side, the Raiders were also beaten by Tahoma, 23-36, while beating Kentlake, 15-49. Ben Hogan was TJ’s top finisher in fifth place in a time of 17:36.
Volleyball
The four Federal Way school district schools were all swept Wednesday night in SPSL action.
Auburn Riverside beat Federal Way, 25-14, 25-12, 25-15, Tahoma beat Jefferson, 25-22, 25-13, 25-22, Emerald Ridge downed Beamer, 25-18, 25-11, 25-12, and Graham-Kapowsin beat Decatur, 25-15, 25-12, 25-8.
Tennis
Jefferson remained in second place in the SPSL North with a 4-1 win over Auburn Riverside Tuesday. The Raiders (10-2) got wins from Joe Lee at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1, Makoa Rosa and Kainoa Rosa at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2, Branden Muraki and Anthony Tomyn at No. 2, 6-2, 6-2, and Brandyn Gomez and Kevin Park, 6-4, 6-3.
Beamer (8-3) swept Bethel Wednesday, 5-0. The Titans dropped only seven games during the five matches, including a 6-0, 6-0 win by Ludomir Wanot at No. 1 singles.
Girls Soccer
The Beamer Titans remained unbeaten on the season with a 5-0 win over Rogers Tuesday night. Beamer (9-0-0) got a pair of goals from Megan Miller and single goals from Breanna Straus, Tiarra Fentress and Holland Crook.
Jefferson improved to 3-3-3 with a 1-0 win over Kentlake Tuesday. The Raiders got a goal from Lindsey Dahl in the eighth minute and Liz Fitch earned the shutout in goal.
