The Thomas Jefferson boys basketball program is without a coach. David Stone resigned Monday due to “health reasons and future career focus,” according to TJ athletic director Mike Grady.

“It’s nothing bad,” he said. “Just too many irons in the fire and not enough time. It broke his heart to tell me, as he loves this place and the kids he had and would have had to work with.”

Stone informed Grady and the rest of the basketball staff at Jefferson Monday night and the current Raider players are being informed today.

During Stone’s two years as the head coach, Jefferson finished 13-26, including 7-12 during the 2008-09 season and 6-14 in 2007-08.

Stone took over the Jefferson program from Tacuma Williams before the 2007-08 season. Williams coached the Raiders for four seasons.

Stone is a 1994 graduate of Federal Way High School, where he played for current Eagle head coach Jerome Collins. During Stone’s playing days at Federal Way, the Eagles advanced to the state tournament during his junior and senior seasons. Federal Way, led by former NBA star Michael Dickerson, finished sixth in 1993 and third in ’94. Stone went on to play at Eastern Washington University.

According to Grady, Jefferson will be posting the head coaching job immediately and hope to fill the position as soon as possible. The Raider boys basketball team hasn’t advanced to the postseason since 1985.
