State track and field: Liberty boys, Kent-Meridian girls place inside top four in 3A

Here is a summary of all the podium places from around South King County following the state track and field meet at Mount Tahoma on May 24-26.

Renton’s Demond Reed Jr. took home the 2A crown in the javelin with a throw of 184-11, beating the second-place thrower by 10 feet. Jonathan Munoz also found his way to the podium in two events and recorded a 40.79 in the 300 hurdles to take third place and took sixth in the 110M hurdles. Redhawk senior Caleb Reed took seventh in the discus, capping a solid year for the Renton track team.

Liberty and Hazen went berserk at state on the boys’ side — both teams placed inside the top five. Liberty took second (41 pts) and Hazen was inside the top five, placing fifth (30 points).

Sutton Flint and Jackson Moffitt frequented the podium individually with Flint winning the 200M and taking fourth (300M hurdles) and sixth (110M hurdles). Moffitt placed second in the 400M and fourth in the 200M.

The Patriots’ 4X4 relay team won the final by almost four seconds, helping Liberty get to a second place finish.

Hazen’s Kenyon Andrews, as a sophomore, won the 300M hurdles for the Highlanders. Hazen’s 4X100M team placed second and junior Illia Biezak took second in the high jump. Maxwell Robeson joined Biezak, taking fifth in the high jump.

On the girls side, Liberty’s Kiona Hill won the javelin event with a 126-11 throw, winning by just two inches.

In Kent, the four schools were all represented at the state championships. Kentlake had just one podium finish, their 4X400 relay team placed fourth.

Kent-Meridian girls found their way on the podium throughout the day. Journey Cole (200M, 2nd; long jump, 6th) and Nashayla Fellows (shotput, 6th; discus, 3rd) were the lone double placers for the Royals. Marcella Jones took eighth in the 400 and both the 4X100 and 4X200 finished second.

On the 4A side, Kentwood and Kentridge had 15 combined placers, but no Conk or Charger was able to reach the top of the podium. Kentridge junior Berry Crosby (long jump) took third and senior Emma-Lee Bogart took second (100M dash ambulatory) were the closest.

Bogart also placed third in the 200M ambulatory and shotput with teammate Casey Ducay (6th).

Chargers junior Ayla Johnson finished fourth in the 100M hurdle for the highest finish from a Charger girl at state. Johnson just beat Shiney Myanaja, who also placed in the hurdles (7th).

Kentridge’s Jordan Miller (100M) and Maurice Abarabar (triple jump) took sixth, with Abarabar finishing eighth in the long jump as well.

Kentwood had a trio of eighth placers on the boys side. Ryan Stamper (800M), Zubair Sabry (pole vault) and Jonathan Yates (javelin) recorded some points for the Conks.

Out of Auburn, just three student-athletes made their way to the podium out of all three schools. Riverside junior Julia Couch took second in her two races, adding to an already heavily decorated trophy case.

Auburn Mountainview sophomore Zachary Heckinger showed out in the wheelchair events as well. Heckinger won the shotput and javelin while taking second in the 100M.

Riverside star volleyball player Sophie Danielson tied for sixth in the high jump for the Ravens in an event she didn’t even compete in a year ago.

Auburn Riverside’s 4X200 team also placed, taking seventh.

Cassie Atkins shined bright in her final track meet in the Federal Way Eagles blue and white. The Federal Way senior took third in the 200-meter sprint and held her crown in the long jump and triple jump.

Eagles junior Geron White also had a really solid day for Federal Way. White took fourth in the triple jump and first in the high jump. The Eagles’ 4X100 had the second quickest qualifying team, but finished eighth in the final heat.

Both Decatur and Todd Beamer had just one athlete on the podium. Keith Rodgers Jr. from Todd Beamer finished sixth in the 300M hurdles and Mariah Siva tossed the rock 37.03 for the final spot on the podium.
