For the second straight year Thomas Jefferson High School’s Amber Cratsenberg walked away from the Class 4A State Swimming and Diving Championships with a title.

The junior defended her 2009 state championship in the 100-yard freestyle Saturday with a blazing time of 50.96, which was good enough to earn automatic All-America status. Cratsenberg won the race by nearly a second over second-place Joanna Wu from Kent-Meridian, who finished in 51.86.

But, unlike last year, Cratsenberg couldn’t pull off the double in the two freestyle sprint events inside the King County Aquatics Center. Cratsenberg finished the 50 free just seven-hundredths of a second behind Skyline’s Katie Kinnear to snag a silver medal in the event. She won the 50 a season ago as a sophomore and her time this year, 23.57, still qualified for All-America consideration.

Cratsenberg’s first- and second-place individual swims Saturday went a long ways in helping her Thomas Jefferson team finish in third place behind defending state champion Skyline (220 points) and Newport (157.5). The Raiders garnered 140 team points and the third-place finish is the highest in school history and the second straight season TJ has finished with the team bronze medal.

But Cratsenberg wasn’t the only individual Federal Way school district athlete to stand out during the 2010 state championships.

Beamer senior Rachel Kim, who signed a national letter of intent to swim at Northwestern University in the fall, finished her final state meet with a pair of silver medals.

Kim wasn’t swimming at 100 percent last weekend because of a painful cyst on her wrist. But she was able to grind out two second-place finishes to end her high school career. Kim finished behind Ballard’s Annemarie Thayer, who is headed to Stanford, in both the 200-yard individual medley and 100 backstroke.

Kim’s time of 2:04.31 in the 200 IM qualifies for All-America consideration and her time in the backstroke was 56.62. Both of Kim’s times broke her own school records at Beamer.

The Federal Way school district dominated the 1-meter diving competition Saturday at the Aquatics Center. District divers occupied four of the top-eight spots on the medal stand, led by the third-place finish of Beamer’s Elizabeth Wiley. The Titan junior finished with 367.5 points and finished behind Kamiak’s Fiona Weeks (383.05) and Eastlake’s Mackenzie Rands (382.15).

The Thomas Jefferson trio of Madi Kellar, Monica Church and Shelby Church also had solid finishes. Kellar ended up in fifth-place overall with 334.45 points, Monica Church was sixth with 330.2 points and Shelby Church finished up eighth with 292.45 points. The diving trio garnered the Raiders a grand total of 38 team points.

Jefferson senior Savannah Coe was also impressive in her two individual events on Saturday inside the King County Aquatics Center. The senior racked up a pair of top-eight finishes in her final state meet of her career at TJ.

Coe’s best individual performance came in the 100 breaststroke with a sixth-place finish in 1:08.80. She qualified for the final heat Friday with a time of 1:07.99.

Coe also helped the Raiders rack up some more points with an eighth-place finish in the 200 individual medley. Coe entered Saturday’s final with the fourth-best time in the preliminaries at 2:10.54, but finished in 2:12.07 during the championship race.

Coe and Cratsenberg were also a part of a pair of Raider relay teams that swam at the state meet. The Jefferson 200 free relay team of Bailey Worrior, Coe, Clara Oh and Cratsenberg finished in fourth place in a time of 1:41.69 after qualifying Friday with the fastest time in preliminaries. The same foursome finished 12th overall in the 200 medley relay.

Other performances at the state swimming and diving meets:

• Decatur’s Kelsey Crowder finished off her Decatur career with a couple impressive swims at the Class 3A State Swimming and Diving Championships Friday and Saturday.

The senior snagged a pair of top-five individual finishes during the championship finals at the King County Aquatics Center and helped the Gators to a 20th-place team finish.

Crowder took fifth in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:11.00. Mercer Island’s Grace Wold won the medley in 2:04.75 and also helped the Islanders win the Class 3A team title over second-place Bainbridge.

Crowder also finished fifth in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.69. Hudson’s Bay senior Nikki Cannon won the race in 56.65.

• Federal Way senior Kaia Barth finished in eighth place during Saturday’s impressive final in the 50 free in a time of 24.91. Barth qualified with the seventh-best time during Friday’s preliminary round. She also ended up 14th in the 100 free “B” Final Saturday in a time of 54.92.

Barth’s teammate, freshman Kenna Ramey, ended up in 13th place in the 50 with a time of 25.17 in the “B” Final Saturday. Ramey also finished up in 18th overall in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:02.12.

Barth and Ramey also led an impressive finish by the Eagles in the 200 freestyle relay, which also included Kayla Ramey and Eva Barth. Federal Way ended up in sixth place Saturday with a time of 1:41.74. The Eagles actually sat in first place after a blazing 24.70 first-leg swim by Kaia Barth.

The same Federal Way foursome ended up 13th overall in the 200 medley relay after the “B” Final Saturday in a time of 1:55.39. The Eagles qualified in 11th Friday with a time of 1:54.43.

• Beamer freshman Estelle Kim finished in 22nd place in the 200 individual medley in 2:24.62.

• The Todd Beamer 200 medley relay team of Taylor Wintler, Rachel Kim, Estelle Kim and Katie Kramer finished in 21st place during Friday’s preliminary session in 1:59.58.

The same four girls also finished 21st in the 200 free relay in a time of 1:46.15 Friday.

• The Decatur 200 medley relay team of Crowder, Annamarie Ciotta, Lanie Vuong and Victoria Snyder finished 17th overall in a time of 2:01.38 at the 3A meet. Vuong, a freshman, also ended up 17th overall in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:02.91.

• The Decatur 200 free relay team of Julyna Ngy, Snyder, Vuong and Ciotta finished 20th overall in a time of 1:50.12 Friday.

• Decatur freshman Annalysa Paradee finished up in 17th place in the 3A 1-meter diving competition with a preliminary round score of 190.15.
