State swimming: Beamer’s Clare and Fraychineaud bring home bronze medals

Shane Clare and Tommy Fraychineaud felt right at home during Friday and Saturday’s Class 4A State Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Beamer pair was competing in their everyday pool inside the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way and their performances proved a little home cooking is the way to go. The Titans train and compete at the Aquatic Center during the regular season.

Clare ended up in third place in the 200-yard individual medley Saturday afternoon in a time of 1:58.33. Marysville-Pilchuck’s Trevor LeValley won the individual medley in 1:55.02 and Oak Harbor’s John Hu was second in 1:55.63.

Clare also swam in the 100 butterfly at the state championships and finished up in 11th place in the event in a time of 54.77. Richland’s Cody Roberts won the butterfly in a state-record time of 47.81. The time was better than Newport’s Ugur Taner’s 17-year-old state record. Roberts, who also won the 100 backstroke, wasn’t the only record-breaker Saturday. Snohomish junior Garren Riechel won the 50 free, then broke his Class 4A record in the 100 breaststroke. His time of 54.49 was 37-hundredths of a second faster than the record time he set Friday afternoon.

Clare also led the Beamer 200 medley relay team to a 14th-place finish, along with teammates Dylan Chase, Costner McKenzie and Blake Jordan.

Fraychineaud led a solid diving twosome from Beamer during the 1-meter finals Saturday. The senior finished up in third place with a total of 418.20.

Redmond’s Max Klassen won the diving championship with a solid total of 452.90 and Davis’ Randall Peltier was second with 444.05. Klassen and Peltier pretty much separated themselves during the preliminary round on Thursday at the King County Aquatic. The two were the only divers in the competition with over 300 points, heading into the finals. Fraychineaud was fourth after the prelims with 283.70, but out-dove Davis’ Jeremy Sculley in the finals to move up one spot in the standings.

Beamer junior Ludomir Wanot ended up in ninth place after the finals with 322.60 points. Wanot sat in sixth place heading into the final round.

Kamiak High School won the Class 4A team title with 222 points, outdistancing second-place Shorewood (206). Kamiak won the final event of the state championships, the 400 freestyle relay, to overtake Shorewood. Kamiak was seeded fifth entering the final and needed to place at least fourth to tie Shorewood for the team championship. Instead, they won in 3:13.82, five seconds better than their top time this season.

Beamer ended up 17th in the team standings and were the top-placing team from the South Puget Sound League.

State notes:

• Decatur sophomore Tanner Brotherton finished 11th in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.70 and failed to make it in the top-16 places in the 100 free.

• Jefferson sophomore Jordan Gaspay ended up in 16th place overall in the 100 breaststroke Saturday afternoon in a time of 1:03.38. Gaspay finished eighth in the “B” Final.

• Beamer’s Costner McKenzie had the 23rd best preliminary time in the 100 butterfly (59.05) Friday, but failed to make it into Saturday’s final.

• Beamer’s Dylan Chase finished 19th in the 100 backstroke during Friday’s preliminary round (59.85).
