State gymnastics: Beamer and West finish in second place; TJ fourth

The Todd Beamer Titans and sophomore Sam West just couldn’t keep up with Woodinville Friday and Saturday at the Class 4A Gymnastics State Championships at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall.

Woodinville cruised to the school’s fourth consecutive team title Friday night, outdistancing second-place Beamer. The Falcons scored 181.1 points, compared to the 169.35 tallied by the Titans. Thomas Jefferson, the South Puget Sound League North Division champion, finished fourth in the team standings with 166.775 points.

West followed up her all-around title at the West Central District Meet a week ago with a solid second-place performance at the state championships. The Beamer sophomore finished with 37.075 points on the four events Friday night.

Woodinville’s Hailey Wells won the all-around title with 37.9 points, which would have been higher had she not fallen off the balance beam during competition.

West finished fifth on the uneven parallel bars with a 9.15, sixth on the beam with a 9.15, 14th on the floor exercise with a 9.4 and ninth on the vault with a 9.375.

Jefferson was led by the performance of Madi Kellar, who finished fifth in the all-around with 36.525 points and also ended up in the top-five in a pair of individual events Saturday afternoon.

Kellar was fifth on the bars with an 8.75 and fourth on the floor exercise with a 9.55.

Jefferson’s Shelby Church ended up 15th in the all-around with 35.475 points and Monica Church was 18th with 34.325 points. Beamer also got solid all-around performances from Jessica Freeborn (19th, 33.95), Chelsi Freeborn (20th, 33.35), Cassie Peterson (21st, 32.675) and Katie Peterson (23rd, 31.475). Chelsi Freeborn also finished eighth on the floor exercise with a 9.3.
