Todd Beamer High School’s Broc Johnson wishes he could have Wednesday back.
The Titan junior, who finished as the runner-up at last year’s Class 4A State Boys Golf Championships, was did in this year after firing an opening-round 80 at the Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick. The round on Wednesday left Johnson 12 strokes back of the lead and right on the cut line entering the second day of the tournament.
But Johnson responded big time Thursday by firing a 70. The two-day total of 150 left Johnson in 11th place. Johnson’s 2-under round Thursday was the best of the day and the second-best of the tournament. Eastlake’s Kevin Penner, who won his second consecutive individual title in a three-way playoff, fired a 68 on the first day.
Snohomish won the boys’ team title over second-place Kentwood. Johnson’s finish helped Beamer finish eighth. Thomas Jefferson, which qualified five players, ended up 11th.
Decatur freshman Amanda Beyke also made a little noise during her first appearance at the Class 4A State Girls Golf Tournament. Beyke finished up in 11th place after two days of action. The freshman followed her first-round 79 Wednesday with a 74 on Thursday at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Beyke, along with Stacey Blunt and Samantha Zeeb, led the Gators to a fifth-place finish. Lewis and Clark claimed the team title, led by Chessey Thomas, who won the individual title with rounds of 71 and 68.
Jefferson’s Jayme Carbon finished up her stellar golf career for the Raiders Thursday by shooting a 75 at Sun Willows. Carbon fired an opening-round 80 and her two-day total of 155 was good for 14th place.
Carbon’s appearance at the state golf championships was the fourth time the TJ senior has qualified. She has already signed a national letter of intent to play in the fall at Eastern Washington University and was back in Tacoma for the Raiders’ appearance at the Class 4A State Fastpitch Tournament.
Carbon, who sports a 3.76 grade-point average, has also been a standout on the softball field. She was the Mirror’s Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2007 when she led TJ to their second state tournament berth in school history. She was also a first-team, All-SPSL selection in 2007 and 2008.
Blunt also had a solid two days of golf in the Tri-Cities. The sophomore was making her second appearance at the state tournament and shot a two-day total of 158. Blunt followed up her opening-round 80 with a 78 on Thursday. Blunt finished up in a tie for 20th place.
On the boys’ side, Jefferson’s Quinn Hildebrandt fired an opening-round 75 to enter the second day in a tie for 13th place. But Hildebrandt followed on Thursday with an 83 to finish in a tie for 37th place with a 158 total.
Jefferson’s Brent Brown and Beamer’s Tyler Collins also made the cut and played both days at state. Brown finished in a tie for 45th after a two-day total of 163 and Collins ended up in 37th with a 157 total.
Jefferson also had three players fail to make the cut after the first day of action in the Tri-Cities. Charles Lee and Erik Jarvey finished one shot back of the cutline after opening-round 81’s and Keenan Darrow fired an 83 on the first day.
On the girls’ side, Zeeb was the lone Federal Way school district state qualifier not to make the cut. Zeeb fired an opening-round 87 at Sun Willows. The cutline was 84 for the girls.
