It was a day of firsts for the Thomas Jefferson High School boys team at the Class 4A State Cross Country Championships Saturday at the Sun Willows Golf Course in the Tri-Cities.

For the first time in the school’s 41-year history, the TJ boys ran as a team at state. The Raiders finished up in 11th place in the standings with 281 points Saturday in Pasco.

Jefferson was led by the 26th place finish by Jeff Baklund. The senior ended up in 26th place overall in a time of 16:01 over the 5,000-meter course.

Baklund was followed by teammates Chase Braxmeyer, who finished 39th overall in 16:14, and senior Ben Hogan ended up in 82nd in 16:49. Other TJ runners to compete at the state meet were Oscar Iraheta (114th, 17:15), Jacob Thoreson (125th, 17:28), Reid Mayfield (132nd, 17:37) and Lionel Estrada (134th, 17:47).

Spokane’s Ferris High School, who entered the season as the top-ranked team in the nation, won the state team championship at the Sun Willows Golf Course. Jackson was runner-up for the second straight year, finishing with 100 points. Ferris won with 68.

Central Kitsap’s Shane Moskowitz won the Class 4A boys race in a blazing time of 15:06 — 16 seconds ahead of Gig Harbor’s Conner Ploquin.

Jefferson’s Monica Jaenicke led the way for the Federal Way school district on the girls’ side Saturday. The senior finished up in 24th place in a time of 19:12 at the Sun Willows Golf Course.

Jaenicke followed up her strong performance at the West Central District Meet, where she finished in ninth place, and cemented her place as the top female runner in the district.

Todd Beamer senior Taylor Kartes ended up in 32nd place Saturday in a time of 19:24 and sophomore teammate Sara Mussa followed in 44th in a time of 19:31. Federal Way junior Jasmine Johnson finished 46th in 19:33 and Decatur junior Nichole Williams was 55th overall in a time of 19:45.

The Eastlake Wolves captured their second straight Class 4A team title with 100 points, despite not placing a runner in the top 10 individually. Tahoma was second with 124 points, followed by Stanwood (126) and Gig Harbor (136).

Garfield senior Anna Dailey (17:58) posted the fastest time of the day in any classification to win the Class 4A individual title.
