STATE BASEBALL: Federal Way falls to Bothell in opener Saturday, 7-1

The Federal Way Eagles won’t be making a return trip to the Class 4A State Baseball Tournament semifinals. The Bothell Cougars made sure of that Saturday afternoon.

The Cougars advanced to Tacoma’s Cheney Stadium with a dominating 7-1 win over the Eagles (16-7) in the opening round of the state tournament at Kent Memorial Park. Bothell beat Edmonds-Woodway later Saturday in the quarterfinals and will take on Richland Friday night in Tacoma.

Federal Way finished in third place at the 2010 state tournament after losing to Kentwood in the semifinals.

The Eagle offense just couldn’t get anything going against Bothell’s ace, Brian McAfee. The senior right-hander ran his season record to a perfect 9-0 by tossing a complete-game, four-hitter against the Eagles.

McAfee struck out five and also finished 2 for 3 with an RBI during the game Saturday. McAfee took shutout into the seventh inning, but Federal Way’s Brett Evans broke it up with a sacrifice fly. Washington State-bound shortstop Nick Tanielu scored Federal Way’s lone run after singling off McAfee earlier in the inning.

The Eagles’ Darrien Moran suffered the loss on the mound. The Bothell offense finished with eight hits, including a pair by leadoff hitter Jon Mercer. Federal Way was also hurt by three uncharacteristic errors in the field.

Senior outfielder Austin Weber finished 2 for 3 with a double for the Eagles.

The loss ends the successful careers of six seniors, including starters Tanielu, Weber, first baseman Adam Yunker, outfielder Drew Cratsenberg and Evans, along with Trevor Stephens.
