Lain and Kelsey Van Ogle competed in the largest BMX (bicycle motocross) race of the season in Tulsa, Okla. recently and both the siblings won their respective age-group titles.

The brother and sister from the Federal Way school district, won titles at the ABA BMX Grand Nationals.

Lain Van Ogle is a freshman at Thomas Jefferson High School who is enrolled in pre-IB classes. He is a three-time BMX world champion and has won numerous national and state championships. He has attended the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calf., twice this year and plans to return in December for another training camp.

Kelsey Van Ogle is a sixth-grader at Sacajawea Middle School who is enrolled in the Cambridge Program and plays select soccer for the Federal Way Reign ‘97 Purple team. She is a two-time BMX world champion and has numerous national and state championships. The pair’s next race will be in Tulsa, Okla., during Thanksgiving for national titles.

Both riders were featured on the Versus Network during the ABA Grand National TV show, which can now be viewed on www.go211.com. Lain and Kelsey are both factory sponsored by Redman Bikes, Lain is also sponsored by Team Mannatech.

Nationally, Lain finished the season in fifth place for all boys age groups and Kelsey finished second for all girls age groups. Their goal for this year is to be able to compete in the BMX World Championships in South Africa at the end of July and are both looking for sponsorship.

• The Federal Way Boys under-16 Warriors Gold Platinum team recently finished in first place in the District III soccer division. The Warriors finished with a record of 13-0-1 and the team scored 58 goals and allowed only seven during the season.

The team is coached by Don Nordman and consists of Nick Bod, Kyle Byquist, Sam Clement, Alex Dedaj, Colin Kim, Michael Klavuhn, Chace Nestor, Aaron Nordman, Tucker Parsons, John Peters, Jarred Prather, Jacob Rohrer, Austin Schultz, Hayden Smith, Stephen Tartaglia and Casey Vaa.

• All boys and girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2010 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship, sponsored by St. Theresa’s Council #7908. The local competition will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Centre at Norpoint on Jan. 24.

The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, and state competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C international headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions. All boys and girls 10 to 14 years old are eligible to participate and will compete in their respective age divisions. Last year more than 179,000 sharpshooters participated in over 3,000 local competitions.

All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in the event. Participants are required to furnish proof of age and written parental consent.

• The Federal Way Police Department will take on South King County Fire and Rescue in a charity basketball game at noon at Decatur High School on Feb. 6. The event is sponsored by the Federal Way Lions Club and all net proceeds will be returned by supporting adults and children who have sight and hearing needs.

There will be a raffle during the game and prizes include a autographed ball by the Harlem Globetrotters, a 90-day pass to 24-Hour Fitness, $25 gift certificate to Black Angus, Tacoma Rainiers tickets and an autographed Seattle Storm basketball.

Halftime entertainment will include the Todd Beamer Dance Team, and the Federal Way, Decatur, Jefferson and Beamer cheer staffs.

Admission to the game is free and there will be a refreshment stand. Patrons are also asked to bring used eyeglasses and hearing aids and cash donations can be made to the Federal Way Lions Foundation, PO Box 3552, Federal Way, 98063.

• The Todd Beamer High School Dance Team will be hosting Beamer Breakdown VII on Jan. 22 and 23. Both performances will start at 7 p.m. in the school’s Great Hall. Tickets are $7 for students and $10 for adults and can be purchased at the door.

The Beamer Dance Team will be showcasing their skills in jazz, hip hop, ballet and other styles of dance. In addition to the Titan dancers, Pacific Northwest Ballroom, Allegro and Illahee Middle School Dance Team will also be performing.

• The Puget Sound Pirates semipro football team will be holding open tryouts for the 2010 Cascade Football League season at 10:30 a.m. at Fife High School’s practice field on Jan. 30.

The Pirates are a second-year team in the CFL and have been based in Tacoma. They have made application to play their home games at Federal Way Memorial Stadium for the upcoming season, which runs from the last weekend of April to early August.

The Pirates are seeking players from Federal Way and the surrounding areas. Playing semipro football in the Cascade Football League does not affect college eligibility and every year players from the CFL receive college scholarship offers. There is no fee to tryout. Players must be 18 years old and in good health. They must bring grass cleats and workout clothes to the tryouts. Practices are held on Saturdays starting Feb. 6 at a site to be announced.

• Federal Way American Little League is hosting tryouts at Sacajawea Middle School in February. For the Majors/AAA divisions the tryouts for 9 and 10 year olds will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 6 and 13. For 11 and 12 year olds the tryouts will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 6 and 13.

• The Federal Way Public Schools will induct its second class into the district’s Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb. 2. The four-member Class of 2010 will be honored at halftime of a boys basketball game between the Todd Beamer Titans and Decatur Gators. The game will be played at Decatur. The 2010 Federal Way Hall of Fame class includes Lou Blaesi, Jim Gard, Bob Stewart and Joann Neil.

The ceremony will be held to introduce and induct the four individuals who had a major impact on the district’s athletic programs. Also, prior to the game, a reception will be held in the Decatur cafeteria starting at 5:30 p.m. Fox Sports analyst and former Decatur and Western Washington University quarterback Jason Stiles will serve as master of ceremonies at both.

Beginning this year, the Hall of Fame Committee will also recognize a district athlete who has gone into the teaching/coaching profession. Receiving this year’s award will be former Decatur High School football player Wayne Lewis, who set defensive records at Western Washington University. He currently is a teacher and coach at Mount Si High School.

The Federal Way Public Schools established the Athletic Hall of Fame to honor past employees who have made a major impact on the district’s athletic programs. The 2010 honorees all have served in the district for over 20 years and have distinguished teaching and coaching careers.

Blaesi has a 28-year history of teaching physical education at Totem Junior High School and coaching football, track, baseball and wrestling. Gard is a 24-year veteran of coaching football and baseball at Thomas Jefferson High School and also serving as athletic director. Stewart was the Federal Way High School head baseball coach for 16 of his 28 years in Federal Way. Neil won three state soccer championships at Federal Way High School during her 42-year career in education.

Nominees to the Hall of Fame are evaluated based on the following criteria: The nominee has served the district for a minimum of 10 years, has been retired for at least five years or deceased and has made a significant impact on the district’s or a school’s athletic program.

• The Harlem Globetrotters are coming back to Kent 7 p.m. Feb. 19 at the ShoWare Center.

The Globetrotters sold out their basketball performance last February at the arena. The team performs basketball wizardry, hilarious antics and plenty of fan interaction.

• The Federal Way Boys and Girls Club is currently enrolling youth for its 2010 Munchkin, Elementary and Middle School basketball leagues.

Munchkin Basketball is a co-ed league for all youth in first and second grade, Elementary Basketball is for third, fourth and fifth graders and the Middle School league will be separate for sixth graders and a 7th/8th grade combined team. The season runs from Jan. 26 to March 19. Games are played in the surrounding Federal Way area school, as well as the Federal Way Boys and Girls Club.

The program costs $60 or $65 after January 22 (plus $20 Club membership fee if not current).

The club also offers a Kindergarten Basketball Clinic for ages 4 to 6. The fee is $55 and runs Feb. 6 to March 13 on Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m. at the club. The deadline for early registration is Jan. 22. Late registration will be accepted on a space available basis and $5 extra charge.
