For the third consecutive year, Federal Way’s Kiel Hicks earned a spot on Team USA in karate.
Hicks will be a freshman at Thomas Jefferson High School in the fall and this year, he finished as the national champion in the 14-year-old male Elite Kata (forms) Division. Hicks will now represent the United States at the 2011 Junior World Karate Championships in Melaka, Malaysia, in October.
The USA Karate National Championships and Team Trials were held in Arlington, Texas, from July 14-17. Hicks participated in four divisions, including two kata divisons and two kumite (fighting) divisions.
In total, Hicks came home with two gold medals, one silver medal and one bronze.
