Sports brief: Federal Way Heat win District 10 fastpitch title

The Heat of Federal Way National Little League won the District 10 Little League Fastpitch Softball Tournament of Champions Saturday.

The Heat, a 12-and-under team, defeated Chinook Little League, 1-0, in the title game at the Federal Way National Complex.

The Heat scored the one and only run of the game with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Alex Haven walked and advanced to second base when the catcher was unable to find the ball. After the second out was made, Aleah Adams hit a dribbler up the first base line which was fielded by the first baseman from Chinook, who then dropped the ball.

Haven was charging hard from second base and scored on the play. Strong defense was the name of the game for the Heat, who committed no errors behind the solid pitching of Dani Ward, who threw six shutout innings, only allowing two hits.

The championship run for Federal Way started on June 5 with the Heat beating South Hill LL, 17-2. The Heat then defeated a very good Kent team, 7-6, on Thursday in a thriller, which saw the Heat score their final three runs with two outs in the final inning of the game.

The team includes Madison Magruder, Sophie Afework, Hannah Davis, Alex Haven, Morgan Vance, Alexis Smithwick, Tricia Hultman, Aleah Adams, Gennie Summers, Dani Ward, Tivona Tinsley, Emily Sanchez and Sam Simundson. The Heat is managed by Tom Magruder and coached by Gary Haven, Monica Adams and Romi Afework.
