Lamar Neagle is no longer a member of Seattle Sounders FC. The Major League Soccer club released the Thomas Jefferson High School graduate on Wednesday. Neagle, 22, was one of three players cut by the Sounders.

“We had to cut our squad down a little bit,” coach Sigi Schmid said in a press release. “Lamar Neagle has done well for us, but we didn’t really see him breaking into the top-20 and the most important thing for him right now is to get games. So hopefully he will find a situation where he can get games at a level that he feels he will continue to grow at.”

Neagle, a forward, scored a pair of goals for the Sounders during the preseason, including the game-winner in Seattle’s 1-0 victory over Norway’s SK Brann in the fifth-place game at the La Manga Cup in Spain last month. He also scored the winning goal in a 3-2 exhibition game against Vancouver in Arizona.

Neagle was added to the Sounders’ official roster last June as a Senior Developmental player, but never played a regular season MLS game.

Neagle made his unofficial Seattle debut during a friendly against Chelsea on July 18.

“It’s kind of surreal,” Neagle said at the time. “I grew up watching these guys play for Chelsea. You never think you’re going to get a chance to play against them. It was a great experience. Pretty intimidating, but it was fun.”

Neagle graduated from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas last year, where he was a three-time All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation selection. Neagle led the Runnin’ Rebels in scoring during his final two years at UNLV.

He scored nine goals during both his junior and senior seasons. As a senior in 2008, he was named second team All-Far-West Region.

Neagle was born in Tacoma before becoming a three-year starter at Jefferson.

During his senior season at TJ, Neagle led the Raiders to a 16-2-4 record and the Class 4A state championship in 2005. It was the seventh state title for the TJ boys soccer program, a state record.

Neagle broke a 31-year-old school record by scoring six goals in one game, and was named the Class 4A state player of the year in 2005. He played club soccer for the Norpoint Chivas in Northeast Tacoma. During his senior season, Neagle tallied 27 goals and 11 assists in just 19 matches. His final goal of the year came on a penalty kick that helped TJ to a 2-1 win over Pasco in the state title match.
