The Thomas Jefferson Raiders snagged the South Puget Sound League’s eighth seed into the West Central/Southwest District Tournament by finishing 1-2 last weekend.
The Raiders (14-6) lost their opening game at the SPSL Tournament to the Emerald Ridge Jaguars, 3-2, in nine innings Thursday at Kent’s Service Fields. Jefferson bounced back Friday with a 10-0 win over Kentwood, but followed with an 8-7 loss to Rogers.
The Raiders will open the double-elimination West Central/Southwest District Tournament at 10 a.m. at Tacoma’s Sprinker Recreation Center Friday against Spanaway Lake, who lost in the SPSL title game to Kentlake.
Against Emerald Ridge, TJ’s Katie Jackson allowed only five hits in nine innings of work. But the Jaguars’ Megan Hendrix was just as good, holding the Raiders to just four hits.
Both teams scored single runs in the second inning and the game remained in a 1-1 tie until the Jags tallied two runs in the top of the ninth. The Raiders fought back with a run in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough.
Jefferson dominated Kentwood Thursday in five innings. The Raiders finished with 12 hits and Jackson gave up just two hits.
Rogers scored the final six runs of the game Friday to overcome a 7-2 deficit. Lexi Goranson finished 2 for 4 with two runs and two doubles and Alyssa Keyes drove in three runs for TJ.
The Raiders will be joined at the district tournament by Beamer. The Titans will be the 10th seed from the SPSL after losing three-straight at the league tournament.
Beamer lost to Tahoma, 13-3, and Auburn Riverside, 13-3, on Thursday and Kentwood beat the Titans, 12-2, on Friday.
Beamer (11-10) will play the SPSL champion Kentlake Falcons at noon at Sprinker Recreation Center in the opening round of the 16-team, double-elimination district tournament. A previous report in the Mirror was incorrect and had the Titans playing at 10 a.m. in a loser-out game.
