The Todd Beamer Titans rolled into the semifinals of the South Puget Sound League Tournament with a pair of one-run wins Wednesday.
The Titans downed Kentlake in their opener at the Kent Service Fields, 4-3, in nine innings and then beat Bethel, 2-1, in the nightcap. The wins set up a matchup with the Tahoma Bears at 4 p.m. at the Service Fields today (May 10). The other semifinal features Emerald Ridge and Kentridge. The SPSL Championship will be played at 6 p.m.
The top-nine finishers at the SPSL Tournament move onto next weekend’s West Central/Southwest District Tournament at Sprinker Park in Spanaway.
Thursday, Beamer got a couple huge pitching performances from Madison Rogers. The sophomore threw a grand total of 16 innings and struck out 29 hitters and allowed only one earned run during the two victories.
Against Kentlake in their opener Thursday, Rogers struck out 18 in nine innings of work and didn’t allow an earned run. Beamer’s defense finished with six errors during the game.
Kentlake took a 3-0 lead with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, but the Titans tallied three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. The game stayed tied until the bottom of the ninth, when Beamer won the game with two outs.
Offensively, the Titans got three hits each from Megan Jewett-Chan, Analee Scott and Taylor Wiemern-Pierce.
Against Bethel, the Braves took the lead with a single run in the top of the fourth inning. But the Titans fought back and got a two-run single from Weimern-Pierce in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the victory.
Rogers allowed only three hits and struck out 11 during the win over Bethel. Beamer’s offense also had three hits during the game, including two from Scott.
Jefferson
The Raiders, who have played in four of the last five state tournaments, lost their opener Thursday to Bethel, 11-1, in six innings. The loss dropped TJ into the loser’s bracket of the tournament.
Against Bethel, the Raiders had four hits and gave up four runs in the second and five more in the third. Alyssa Keyes finished 1 for 2 for TJ.
