A state championship usually means a team has a lot of talent.
The 2009 edition of the Federal Way High School boys basketball team is no different. In fact, all five starters from the Eagles’ state title team will be playing at the collegiate level. Current seniors Cole Dickerson and Isiah Umipig made sure of that Wednesday.
The pair both signed their national letters of intent to compete at the Division-I level next year. Dickerson, a 6-foot-6 forward, inked with the University of San Francisco and Umipig, a 6-foot guard, will play at Cal State Fullerton.
Wednesday was the first day of the early signing period for athletes in such sports as basketball, baseball, fastpitch and soccer, among others.
Dickerson and Umipig will join current freshmen Michael Hale, Andre Barrington and Jeffrey Forbes at the next level. Hale is playing at North Idaho College, Barrington is playing linebacker at Washington State and Forbes is a freshman guard at Eastern Washington.
Dickerson was the most consistent player for Federal Way last year. He led the Eagles in scoring at 17.5 points a game, finished in double figures in 28 of Federal Way’s 30 games and also led the Eagles in rebounding at 8.21 a game.
During Federal Way’s postseason run, Dickerson was named to the Class 4A state All-Tournament Team after averaging 17 points in four victories in Tacoma.
San Francisco is coached by former NBA player and University of Kansas star Rex Walters. Last season, the Dons finished 11-19 overall and were the seventh-place team in the West Coast Conference. San Francisco lost to Pepperdine in the opening round of the WCC Tournament.
Umipig led all scorers during the Eagles’ win over the Garfield Bulldogs in the state title game inside the Tacoma Dome last season, finishing with 19 points on 5-of-9 shooting. During the state tournament, Umipig averaged 8.5 points a game, despite not being 100 percent healthy.
Umipig played only 13 games during the regular season last year after suffering an ankle injury during the fall, and was just rounding into game shape at the state tournament.
Cal-State Fullerton, which finished 15-17 last year, plays in the Big West Conference. The Titans finished as the seventh-place team and lost to Cal State Santa Barbara in the Big West Tournament.
Other Federal Way school district college signees:
• Hannah Kiyohara: The current Jefferson senior signed early to play fastpitch at the University of Louisville on Wednesday. The shortstop was The Mirror’s 2009 All-City Fastpitch Player of the Year after leading the Raiders to the school’s second state tournament appearance in the past three years.
Kiyohara led TJ in basically every offensive category from the leadoff position. She finished with a .508 batting average, 33 hits, two triples, one home run, scored 21 times, knocked in 22 runs and stole eight bases — all of which led the Raiders. She also led the SPSL North Division with 14 runs scored and a .744 slugging percentage.
Kiyohara visited the Louisville campus last summer while her summer league team, the Washington Sidewinders, was in Kentucky playing at a national tournament.
“I was thinking that I didn’t really want to go there,” Kiyohara said last spring. “But I really fell in love. Someone told me that you are going to know where you want to go right away and I did. I was kind of looking to get away from home and experience some new things.”
• Sarah Petosa: The Todd Beamer senior fastpitch player signed Wednesday to play in the fall at Seattle University. Petosa was a first-team, All-SPSL South Division selection and was the Titans’ best offensive player during the season. Petosa, a center fielder, had six multi-hit games during the year and stole double-digit bases, including three in three different games. Petosa was an All-City selection last season.
Seattle University finished 18-20 last season and will play against the defending national champion Washington Huskies several times this season.
• Taylor Winton: The 6-foot-1 Todd Beamer senior fastpitch player will be playing her college ball at Marshall University in West Virginia. The Thundering Herd roster currently includes two other SPSL South players in Melanie Stoehr (Rogers) and Taylor Thompson (Graham-Kapowsin).
Winton, a catcher, proved to be one of the most powerful hitters in the SPSL South last spring. She had six multi-hit games during the regular season and pounded out two home runs. She was a second-team, All-SPSL South selection and led the Titans to the program’s first-ever postseason.
• Dan Young: The Federal Way High School graduate is set to ink with the Western Washington University basketball team. The 6-10 center is currently playing his sophomore season at Highline Community College.
“I think it was a good fit as far as the program goes,” Young told the Thunderword.
Young averaged eight points, six rebounds and 1.25 blocks a game last year during his freshman season at Highline.
Young was also recruited by Eastern Washington, Idaho State and Southeastern Louisiana University, among others.
“I think Dan is going to get better and better as his repetition and confidence grows,” said Highline coach Che Dawson.
