Hop on everybody. There’s plenty of room for everybody on the Seattle Seahawks bandwagon.
The bandwagon is making stops all over the Pacific Northwest, and the proverbial bus is getting fuller each week.
No more seats are available. In fact, the bandwagon is reaching a point of standing-room only.
The Seahawks moved to 6-1 on the season with a dominating 34-22 Thursday Night Football win over the Arizona Cardinals — and are widely considered the best team in the National Football Conference.
The Seahawks are a legitimate force to be reckoned with, and truly a favorite to bring Seattle the city’s first professional sports championship since the now-defunct SuperSonics won the NBA title back in 1979.
Everywhere you go around the Pacific Northwest, all you see are Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch jerseys. There are also more Seahawks hats, sweatshirts and T-shirts floating around than coffee shops.
There is an underside to the success of the 2013 edition of the Seattle Seahawks. There are legitimate, longtime fans who are actually upset with all the “wannabe” fans jumping on the Seahawks Express bandwagon.
It’s kind of funny, actually. As one of those “legit, longtime” fans, I say the more the merrier.
Why would I be upset that people are actually rooting for “my team?” Answer is, I wouldn’t. Jump on board, people. Let’s ride this train all the way to the Super Bowl.
The fair-weather fans don’t bug me at all. It means that the Seattle Seahawks are winning football games, and that’s what matters.
Some hardcore fans say the sudden rise of the bandwagon isn’t a good thing. They say these fans are comparable to Pamela Anderson — fake. Where were they when the Seahawks went 5-11 during the 2009 season?
These bandwagon fans are essentially slapping the longtime season-ticket holders, who go way back to the Kingdome days, smack dab in the face. They are jumping on board because the Seahawks are very, very good and they will leap right off if the Hawks happen to lose in the playoffs or a few years down the road, when the team goes back to being mediocre.
This is the same thing that happened to the Seattle Mariners following the magical run from 1995 through 2001. The Kingdome and Safeco Field were packed every night during that time. Mariners memorabilia was flying off the racks, and players could do no wrong.
After 12-straight seasons of not making the playoffs, Safeco Field is now a barren wasteland during the spring and summer.
But, that’s just how things work. I’ll let you in on a little secret: It’s not fun to spend your hard-earned money to drive to downtown Seattle, pay to park your car, pay for tickets, and pay $10 for a beer to watch a team get boat-raced.
Wouldn’t you rather spend all that money and go watch a Seahawks game where the crowd is super fired-up, yelling their lungs out, leading to a victory? That’s fun and that’s reality.
So, even if you are a “new” Seattle Seahawks fan or remember the days of yore when Jim Zorn and Steve Largent were wearing blue, let’s just enjoy the ride.
Jump on board and let’s ride this bandwagon all the way to the Super Bowl.
