The Thomas Jefferson boys golf team has had a pretty amazing start to its season. The Raiders picked up their first win of the season Tuesday at Riversbend Golf Course in Kent over the Curtis Vikings.
But it wasn’t easy, which is not a real big surprise for the TJ golfers. Of the Raiders (1-2) three matches this year, all three have been decided by a grand total of one point.
For the second time this season the Raiders played to a stone-cold tie Tuesday against the Vikings, 93-93. But, unlike their first match of the season, Jefferson came out victorious this time around. The South Puget Sound League employs a tiebreaking system that totals up the number of strokes by a team to determine the winner. Tuesday, TJ’s six varsity golfers finished with less shots than Curtis’ six golfers.
In their opening match of the season, the Raiders were beaten in a tiebereaker by Beamer. The Titans had 232 strokes, compared to TJ’s 234. The Raiders were then beaten by Auburn Riverside, 77-76.
Against Curtis, Jefferson was led by the Charles Lee and Brent Brown. The pair fired matching 1-over par, 37s at Riverbend. Kennan Darrow and Quinn Hildebrandt both shots 38s.
Beamer moved to 3-0 on the season with another close victory. Tuesday the Titans nipped the Auburn Riverside Ravens, 82-81, at Sumner Meadows. Tyler Collins led the way with a 1-under, 35.
The Jefferson and Decatur girls golf teams both picked up wins Tuesday. The Raiders beat Curtis, 75-30, and the Gators downed Federal Way, 68-44. Jayme Carbon was medalist for TJ with a 43 at Meadow Park Golf Course and Stacey Blunt shot an even-par, 36 at Twin Lakes.
Volleyball
The Federal Way Eagles are rolling in the preseason. Federal Way has put together two-straight wins a season after finishing 0-14 in the South Puget Sound League North Division.
The Eagles downed the Beamer Titans Tuesday to move to 2-1 in non-league action, 25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 25-20. Federal Way got 40 assists from Trisha Paulino, 12 kills, 10 digs and five aces from Taylor Harris, 12 kills from Monica McConnaughey, 10 blocks from Paulina McKenna and eight kills, eight blocks and six aces from Danielle Tanielu.
Jefferson remained unbeaten on the season (2-0) with a three-game sweep of Decatur Tuesday, 25-11, 25-13, 25-12. The Raiders got 25 assists from Allie Crowe, nine kills from Morgann Green and six kills and five aces from Kendra Ansotigue.
Jefferson hosts Federal Way Monday in both teams’ SPSL North opener.
Tennis
Jefferson moved to 4-1 in the SPSL North with three wins earlier this week. The Raiders downed Auburn Monday, 4-1, and swept Kent-Meridian 5-0 twice Wednesday in a rare tennis double header. Jefferson dropped a total of 18 games during the two matches against Kent-Meridian.
The Raiders lone loss of the season came to Kentridge, who is unbeaten in the SPSL North.
Beamer moved to 3-1 in the SPSL South with wins over Bethel Wednesday, 5-0, and Curtis Monday, 3-2. Freshman No. 1 singles player, Joseph Dela Cruz, dropped just one game in his two matches.
Girls soccer
The Todd Beamer Titans remained the only team in the SPSL South with a loss or a tie with an 8-1 win over Spanaway Lake Tuesday. The Titans (3-0-0) got a pair of goals from Rebecca Burns and Megan Miller and single goals from Jessica Sanchez, Breanna Straus, Sara Miller and Holland Crook.
Decatur’s Hannah Herbert tallied her second goal of the game with just two minutes remaining in Tuesday’s game with Curtis to break a 1-1 tie and give the Gators the win. Herbert also scored in the 62nd minute. Decatur moved to 1-1-0 in the SPSL South.
