Another year, another championship for the Thomas Jefferson boys tennis team.
The Raiders team continued their dominance of the South Puget Sound League Central Division. Jefferson ended the SPSL Central Division regular season with a perfect 10-0 record thanks to a pair of victories earlier in the week. It was TJ’s second-straight unbeaten SPSL Central championship. The Raiders also finished 10-0 last year.
Jefferson officially clinched the Central Division title with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Auburn Riverside (7-3) Monday. The Ravens, who finished in second place, won both singles matches. But the Raiders dominated the three doubles’ matches to earn the victory.
The No. 1 team of Makoa and Kainoa Rosa and the Raiders’ No. 2, Brandyn Gomez and Alex Lee, both pitched shutouts against Auburn Riverside. Jefferson’s third win came from James Lee and Richard Ban at No. 3 doubles, 6-3, 6-3.
The Raiders then downed Beamer (0-10) in their regular season finale Wednesday, 4-1. The Titans’ lone win came from state veteran Joseph de la Cruz at No. 1 singles over Makoa Rosa, 6-1, 4-6, 10-8. Jefferson got victories from Tyler Hamashima at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-2, Kainoa Rosa and Gomez at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-0, James Lee and Ban at No. 2, 6-4, 6-1, and Alex Lee and Russell Stelzer at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0.
Next up for the Raiders and the rest of the league is the tennis postseason. The SPSL Tournament kicks off today at Kent-Meridian and Auburn high schools. The tournament will continue on Monday and Tuesday.
There are 10 berths on the line in both singles and doubles’ competition into the West Central District Tournament. The district tournament will be played in the spring, along with the Class 4A State Boys Tennis Tournament.
Golf
The Todd Beamer boys slipped by Federal Way Tuesday, 50-46, at Sumner Meadows. The Titans’ Geoff Hadfield and Federal Way’s Jordan Ferguson tied for low round with matching 41s.
Beamer also won a close match over the Eagles on the girls’ side, 51-36. Jennifer Lee continued her impressive season by shooting a 2-over par, 39 at Northshore. Federal Way was led by Emily Victor’s 50.
Alexus Song fired a 1-over, 37 to earn medalist honors during Jefferson’s 101-50 win over Curtis Tuesday at Meadow Park.
Girls Soccer
Jefferson (4-3-2) picked up a much-needed win Tuesday over Kentwood, 2-1. The Raiders’ got a pair of goals from junior Lindsey Dahl, including the game-winner in the 70th minute. Kentwood entered the game 6-2-0 on the year.
Beamer (6-0-3) remained on top of the SPSL South standings by playing Curtis to a 0-0 tie Tuesday. The Titans’ Meghan Graf pitched her sixth shutout of the year in goal. Beamer has allowed only two goals this season.
Decatur (5-3-0 overall) shut out Peninsula in SPSL 3A action Tuesday. The Gators got goals from Rachel Neira, Sierra Shugarts and Hannah Hebert. Allison Lewis got the shutout in net.
Cross Country
Both Thomas Jefferson cross country teams got sweeps Wednesday afternoon over Mount Rainier and Kentlake. The Raider girls downed Mount Rainier, 16-45, and Kentlake, 22-35. The TJ boys won 24-34 over Mount Rainier and 23-33 over Kentlake.
Senior Chase Braxmeyer won the 5,000-meter race on the boys’ side in 17:01, outdistancing teammate Jacob Thoreson (17:10). On the girls’ side, TJ runners finished 2-3-4-5 with Leah Kiyohara leading the way in second place. Jefferson’s Amanda Ditzhazy, Brianna Calveri and Lindsey Jackson followed in third through fifth.
The Federal Way boys remained unbeaten in the SPSL South with a pair of wins over Emerald Ridge, 15-44, and Spanaway Lake, 15-50, Tuesday. The Eagles swept the first five places during the race. Meron Simon won in 17:27, followed by Brandon Thurston (17:28), Patrick Crews (17:52), Nathan Brewster (17:58) and Ben Willis (18:00).
The Eagle girls suffered their first league loss to Emerald Ridge Tuesday, 23-34, but were able to beat Spanaway Lake, 23-33. Jasmine Johnson led the way for Federal Way in second place (19:40).
