PREP SPORTS WRAP UP: Kentwood downs Federal Way baseball at SPSL Tournament

The Federal Way Eagles baseball team just can’t get over the hump against the Kentwood Conquerors in the postseason.

The Conquerors beat Federal Way, 6-2, Friday night at the South Puget Sound League Tournament to earn the league’s third seed into the West Central/Southwest District Tournament. The Eagles (14-5) will be the SPSL’s fourth-place team. Both Kentwood and Federal Way finished second in their respective divisions.

The defending state-champion Conquerors (15-6) also beat the Eagles in the semifinals of the Class 4A State Tournament a season ago. Federal Way eventually finished third.

Friday night at Art Wright Field in Kent, the Conquerors tallied two runs in the top of the first and never trailed during the game. Kentwood got a big two-run home run from Taylor Jones and a strong pitching performance from Kyle Doyle.

The Eagles’ scored one run in the first and one in the fourth.

Federal Way is scheduled to play the Olympia Bears at 7 p.m. at Art Wright Field on Tuesday, May 10 in the opening round of the West Central/Southwest District Baseball Tournament.

Olympia won the Narrows League championship by beating Gig Harbor last week in the title game.

The winner of the Federal Way-Olympia game earns an automatic berth into the Regional Tournament. The loser will have to win two games in a row to gain entrance.

Decatur

The Gators (6-12 overall) had their season come to an end Friday at the hands of the Highline Pirates. The Pirates shut out Decatur, 8-0, in a loser-out game at the SPSL/Seamount/Olympic Sub-District Tournament at Mosier Park in Burien.

Highline took a 2-0 lead in the third inning and added four runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Decatur could muster only four hits on the day, including two by Christian Meister. Romiro Ponce took the loss on the mound for the Gators.

 

SOCCER

Federal Way

The Eagles (8-5-3) earned fourth place in the SPSL South Division with a 2-0 win over the Puyallup Vikings Friday night. Federal Way will now take on the Mount Rainier Rams at the SPSL Tournament.

The Rams also finished fourth in the SPSL North. The game will be at 6 p.m. at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup on Wednesday, May 11. The winner will be the SPSL’s seventh seed to the West Central District Tournament and the loser will be the eighth.

Against Puyallup, Colin Kim dished out a pair of assists on goals from Daulton Guevara and Alex Lewis. Ben Willis got the shutout in net for Federal Way.

Jefferson

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders (12-2-2) secured second-place in the SPSL North Division with a 2-0 shutout of the Kentlake Falcons Friday night in both teams’ regular-season finales.

Jefferson’s goals came from Jamie Prado-Huerta and Isidro Prado-Huerta during the match. Isidro’s goal came in the 70th minute to essentially put the game away for the Raiders.

McKay Owsley and Luis Roman combined on the shutout in net for TJ.

Jefferson will take on the Emerald Ridge Jaguars at 8 p.m. at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup on Wednesday, May 11 at the SPSL Tournament. Emerald Ridge finished second in the South Division. The winner will earn the league’s third seed to the West Central District Tournament and the loser will be the fourth.

 

TRACK

The Auburn Mountainview girls track and field team delivered the school’s first ever South Puget Sound League 3A title with a 87-54 win over Decatur Thursday. The win left the Lions 5-0 in league.

The Decatur girls got a pair of first-place finishes from junior Tori Zellerhoff. She won the 1,600 meters in a time of 5:43.64 and the 3,200 in 12:17.17. The Gators’ other wins came from Anna Paradee in the 100 hurdles (17.40), Carly Carson in the high jump (5-2), Sydnee Patin in the pole vault (9-6) and Ericka Budinich in the long jump (16-3 3/4).

The Decatur boys also lost to Auburn Mountainview in their SPSL 3A finale Thursday, 100-34.

The Gators’ Drew Thompson snagged two individual wins in the high jump (6-4) and 110 hurdles (16.80)and finished second in the pole vault (10-0).

Decatur also got individual wins from Jonathan Osborne in the triple jump (37-1 1/4) and Brandon Siliga in the shot put (42-0).

The Gators now turn their attention to the track and field postseason, which kicks off Thursday at the SPSL/Seamount/Bremerton Sub-Disrict Meet at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner. The meet will continue on Saturday.
