PREP SPORTS WRAP UP: Decatur baseball loses to Enumclaw in football-type score, 23-17

The Decatur baseball team came up just short in a game that featured a combined 25 hits, 23 walks and 40 runs Tuesday against the first-place Enumclaw Hornets.

Enumclaw (9-1) downed the Gators, 23-17, after scoring nine runs in the third inning and six in the fifth. Decatur (4-5 SPSL 3A, 4-8 overall) took a quick 9-6 lead with six runs in the first and three more in the second.

“The game was really crazy and long,” said Decatur head coach Maury Kincannon. “It was pretty tough on the pitchers for both teams.”

The Hornets (0 finished with four home runs during the game.

Offensively, Decatur was led by Brett Johnson, who finished 2 for 3 with a home run, two RBIs and five runs. Freshman Brandon Zimmerman ended up 3 for 5 with two runs and Derek Bontempo was 3 for 5 with a run.

The Gators responded with an 11-5 win over Auburn Mountainview Wednesday. Decatur tallied four runs each in the third and fourth innings to take control. Zimmerman finished 2 for 4 with two runs.

Federal Way

The Eagles (9-3 SPSL South, 10-4 overall) remained in third place in the SPSL South with a 9-3 loss to Puyallup Tuesday. The Vikings (11-1) used a grand slam by James Harris in the first inning to get the win and Ryan Schmitten finished with 11 strikeouts on the mound.

Austin Weber took the loss on the mound, going 5 1/3 innings and striking out six. Weber also finished with two RBIs and a double at the plate.

The Eagles, however, did beat Spanaway Lake Monday handily, 15-3. Federal Way’s Evan Elliot threw a complete-game, six-hitter and struck out eight. Darien Moran was perfect at the plate, 3 for-3, with three runs, three RBIs and two doubles. Austin Weber finished 3 for 5 with two runs and two RBIs.

Beamer

The Titans (6-4 SPSL South, 9-4 overall) picked up back-to-back wins over the Bethel Braves Monday and Tuesday. Beamer downed Bethel, 3-1, Monday and beat the Braves, 5-2, Tuesday afternoon.

On Monday, Matt Bower and Brett Oyer combined on a two-hitter. Adam Bolf finished 1 for 2 with an RBI and Mac Gridley was 2 for 3 with a run and a double at the plate.

On Tuesday, Richie Apigo got the win on the mound and Oyer finished 1 for 4 with an RBI triple.

The Titans also blew away Spanaway Lake Wednesday, 18-0, in five innings. Gridley finished with a home run and three RBIs and runs, Dallin Havili was 2 for 2 with two runs and two RBIs and Lawyer Braun finished 1 for 3 with a pair of RBIs. Sam Kosbab got the win on the mound.

Jefferson

The Raiders (3-7 SPSL North, 4-8 overall) beat up Mount Rainier Tuesday in six innings, 15-4. Jefferson scored all 15 of its runs in the final three innings after trailing 4-0.

Dylan Cooper belted a three-run home run and Steven Sonnenfeld and K.W. Williams both finished with three hits each. Sonnenfeld scored two runs and Williams finished with three RBIs. Tyler Zumwalt got the win on the mound for TJ.

Tahoma got the best of the Raiders Wednesday, 15-7. The Bears used eight runs in the fifth inning to break open the game. Niko Delacruz finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Sonnenfeld had a pair of RBIs.

 

TENNIS

Decatur

The Gators remained unbeaten on the season with a non-league, 3-2, win over Auburn Riverside Monday and a 4-1 victory over Peninsula Wednesday.

Against Auburn Riverside, Decatur won all three doubles matches to get the victory. Meghan Cassens and Chanel Carlson won at No. 1, 6-2, 6-0, Christina Sessoms and Jen Kanesta won at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0, and Kamilla Nowasad and Salena Shugarts won at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0.

The Gators’ wins against Peninsula came from Jessica Kim at No. 2 doubles, Cassens and Carlson, Sessoms and Kanesta and Shugart and Nowosad.

Jefferson

The Raiders (3-1) dropped their first SPSL Central Division match of the season Tuesday to Auburn Riverside, 3-2. All three of TJ’s losses came in doubles’ action and in three-set thrillers.

The Raiders’ two wins came from Breanna Ziccarelli at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4, and Cindy Park at NO. 2, 6-3, 6-4.

Jefferson did get a 4-1 win over Federal Way Monday. The Raiders got wins from Ziccarelli at No. 1 singles over Haley Ward, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, and Park at No. 2 singles over Janna Umetin, 6-1, 6-0. Federal Way’s lone victory came from Mina Park and Lauren Lang at No. 1 doubles over Krista Nakamura and Melissa Greenheck, 6-3, 6-2.

Jefferson’s final two victories came from Amanda Ziccarelli and Nichelle Song at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, 6-0, and Toni Mullen and Coco Hernandez at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0.

Beamer

The Titans picked up a pair of wins Monday and Tuesday. Beamer beat Curtis, 4-1, Monday and downed Federal Way, 3-2, Tuesday afternoon.

Against Curtis, Beamer’s victories came from Jenny Hoefel at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, Lindsey Tyson at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1, Kiele Bowman and Alyssa Tyson at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-2, and Taylor Lunka and Julia Guo at No. 3 doubles, 6-3, 6-3.

In the Federal Way match, the Titans’ wins came from Amy Lee at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 7-6, Lunka and Guo at No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 6-2, and Kauffman and Alyssa Tyson at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0.

Federal Way’s two victories came from Haley Ward at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3, and Lauren Lang and Mina Park at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 6-1.

 

SOFTBALL

Jefferson

The Raiders (5-2 SPSL North) swept a double-header over Mount Rainier Tuesday. Jefferson won 4-1 and 8-2. Katie Jackson picked up the wins on the mound in both games and was also 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two doubles in the first game.

Lexi Gornason also finished 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a pair of doubles in the opener.

In the nightcap, TJ tallied six runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie. Goranson, Jackson and Nicole Greenheck all finished with three hits and two RBIs.

Beamer

The Titans (4-3 SPSL South) dominated Bethel Tuesday during a 10-3 SPSL South win, but lost 3-2 to Spanaway Lake Wednesday.

Beamer couldn’t figure out Spanaway Lake’s Cara Custer, who struck out 15 and allowed only three hits. The Titans’ Emma Blauser was also solid on the mound, allowing only four hits.

Against Bethel, Beamer jumped out to a 9-0 lead. Blauser allowed five hits on the mound and Halle Colson, Kelsey McDonnell and Alyssa Woods all finished with three hits each.

Decatur

The Gators (0-9) were shutout, 11-0, by the Peninsula Seahawks Tuesday and lost to Enumclaw Wednesday, 19-3.

Against Enumclaw, the Gators got two hits each from Alli Sherwin and Erin Slater.

Against Peninsula, Decatur managed just two hits, including one by Lindsay Dickinson. The Gators also committed eight errors.

Federal Way

The Eagles (0-6 SPSL South) gave up 11 runs in the bottom of first inning during a 15-2 loss to Puyallup Tuesday. Mercede Vongsaveng finished 2 for 3 at the plate for Federal Way.

 

SOCCER

Federal Way freshman Odason Pelogi scored a goal just minutes before the final whistle Wednesday night to pull out a 2-2 tie against the talented Todd Beamer Titans at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. The tie kept Beamer in first place in the SPSL South.

The Titans (8-0-3) took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of goals in the first half. Ike Crook got things going in the seventh minute on a pass from Ugo Okoli and Austin Sweeney took an Okoli pass in the 34th minute to make it 2-0.

The Eagles (5-3-2) got their first goal in the 46th minute from Colin Kim.

Decatur

The Gators improved to 5-2-0 in the SPSL 3A Division with a 3-0 shutout of the Enumclaw Hornets Tuesday night. Auburn Mountainview and Bonney Lake are also tied with Decatur at 5-2-0 at the top of the league.

Decatur got goals from Spencer Smith, Nick Karis and Jake Ruiz-Velasco. Karis also assisted on Ruiz-Velasco’s goal.
