Prep sports wrap: TJ gymnasts open the season in impressive fashion; SPSL basketball kicks off

The Thomas Jefferson gymnastics team opened the season with a big sweep of Federal Way and Kentwood Thursday night. The Raiders, who finished unbeaten in the South Puget Sound League last season, tallied 156.95 points. Federal Way finished with 130.65 points and Kentwood ended with 124.3.

Jefferson was led by the performance of Madi Kellar, who won the all-around competition with 35.50 points to outdistance her teammate Monica Church (35.20). Kellar also won individual titles in the floor exercise (9.5), balance beam (8.8) and the uneven parallel bars (9.0). Church won the vault with an impressive 9.4.

Jefferson’s Kelsey Barrett finished third in the all-around with 32.2 points and Federal Way’s Valerie Pham was fourth (30.7).

Boys basketball

Decatur 71, Auburn Riverside 63 (Saturday)

The seventh-ranked Decatur Gators picked up their first win of the season Saturday over the Ravens in Auburn. The Gators got 32 points from senior Jerron Smith and scored 49 points in the second half to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit.

The Gators, who only had four players score for the second game in a row, also got 18 points from Dom Hunter and 17 from Abraham Logan-Ferrell.

Federal Way 78, Puyallup 67 (Friday)

The fifth-ranked Eagles needed a second-half comeback to beat the upset-minded Puyallup Vikings Friday in Puyallup. The Vikings rolled out to a 24-17 lead after the first quarter and extended it to 45-33 at the half.

But the Eagles, behind Jerry Duckworth and Napa Mefi, outscored Puyallup 45-22 in the second half to win their SPSL South opener.

Duckworth, a senior guard, finished with a career-high 29 points and Mefi, also a senior, chipped in 19. Freshman DeeShawn Tucker tallied 11 points in his much-anticipated debut for the Eagles.

Beamer 74, Emerald Ridge (Friday)

The Todd Beamer Titans made a frantic comeback in the second half Friday night to nip the Emerald Ridge Jaguars in Puyallup, 74-71. The Titans outscored Emerald Ridge 41-25 during the third and fourth quarters to overcome a dreadful first quarter. The Jaguars jumped out to a 25-11 lead after the first eight minutes of play.

Beamer got big scoring nights from guards Anthony Moore and Terrance Salazar. The twosome combined for 49 of the Titans’ points, including a career-high 29 from Moore. Andrew Maran tallied nine points and senior Mac Gridley finished with eight.

Beamer hosts Bethel on Thursday night.

Kentridge 81, Jefferson 50 (Friday)

The Kentridge Chargers looked like one of the better teams in the state Friday night, pounding Jefferson, 81-50. The game was the SPSL North openers for both teams.

Kentridge jumped out to a 42-22 lead at halftime. The Chargers, the sixth-ranked team in the state, was led by 21 points from Gonzaga-bound guard Gary Bell. The Raiders (2-1 overall) got 15 points from Deontae Davis.

The Raiders bounced back Saturday night with a 63-54 non-league win over Bethel. Chase Braxmeyer led three TJ players in double figures with 13 points. Davis and Daryon James both finished with 12 points.

Girls basketball

Federal Way 65, Puyallup 25 (Friday)

The Eagles opened up their season with a huge win over the Puyallup Vikings Friday night at home.

Federal Way built a 46-10 halftime lead and cruised in the second half. The Eagles were led by 17 points from Dyesha Bellhumeur and 16 from Darah Huertas-Vining. University of Washington-bound forward Talia Walton had 12 points.

Jefferson 38, Kentridge 32 (Friday)

The Raiders moved to 2-0 on the year with a home win over the Chargers Friday night.

Jefferson got 15 points from talented sophomore Jada Piper and six from Lexi Goranson. The Raiders outscored Kentridge, 13-9, in the fourth quarter.

Emerald Ridge 76, Beamer 60 (Friday)

The Titans started solidly against one of the better teams in the SPSL South Friday night. Beamer jumped out to an 18-17 lead after the first quarter, but couldn’t contain Taylor Buie and Stephanie Riley. The pair combined for 53 points, including 33 from Buie.

The Titans were led by 19 points from Shyla Akins and 17 from Megan Graf.
