Another year, another league championship for the Thomas Jefferson boys tennis team. The Raiders won their second consecutive South Puget Sound League Tournament title Tuesday at Auburn Riverside High School.

Jefferson, who were unbeaten during the SPSL Central season, outdistanced Kentridge to win the championship. Kentridge, who won the regular season SPSL North title, ended up 10 points behind TJ, 45-35.

The Raiders will be sending a pair of singles players and three doubles teams on the West Central/Southwest District Tournament, which will be held Oct. 26-27 at the Capitol City Court Club in Olympia.

Alex Chan lost in the championship to Federal Way junior Mitch Stewart, 6-1, 6-0. Stewart is the defending Class 4A singles champion and is looking to qualify for his third-straight state final. He finished second as a freshman.

Stewart will be joined at the district tournament by his teammate, Alex Lewis. Lewis finished sixth after losing to Kentlake’s Derek Welch, 6-1, 6-0, in the third/sixth match Tuesday.

Jefferson’s Alex Lee and Beamer’s Jimmie Stone will also play at districts after finishing in the top-eight at the SPSL Tournament. Lee beat Stone in the fifth/eighth match Tuesday, 6-0, 6-2.

On the doubles’ court, the TJ teams of Abishek Murali and Tyler Hamashima, Cameron and Zack Martin and Richard Ban and Vivek Ramanujan all advanced into the district tournament.

Murali and Hamashima, both seniors, snared the SPSL’s third seed with a win over an Auburn pair in the third/sixth match, 6-1, 6-4. The Martin brothers downed the team of Ban and Ramanujan in the fourth/seventh match Tuesday, 6-2, 6-4.

Federal Way finished up in fourth place overall at the 18-team SPSL Tournament with 21 points and Beamer was 13th.

This will be the first time the district tournament will be held in the fall with state berths on the line. In years’ past, the tournament was held in the spring.

Football

The second-ranked Federal Way Eagles remained unbeaten with a 42-13 win over Spanaway Lake Thursday at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

The Eagles (7-0) jumped out to a 42-0 lead before halftime thanks to three touchdown from super sophomore Chico McClatcher and three touchdown passes from senior quarterback Evan Elliot.

McClatcher scored on a pair of runs and also caught an 80-yarder from Elliot. Elliot also had scoring passes to Mike Tate and Brandon Warren. The Eagles’ other first-half touchdown came on a 30-yard interception return from Keenan Curran.

Beamer fell to 1-6 on the season with a 38-13 loss to Emerald Ridge Friday night at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup. The Titans fell behind 21-0 early the second quarter, but fought back to cut the Emerald Ridge lead to 21-13 at halftime.

The Titans got a touchdown from Adrian Shocks, who caught a 50-yard pass from Taylor Davis. Archie Ioramo followed with a 63-yard interception return for Beamer’s second score.

The second half was all Emerald Ridge, however. The Jaguars tallied the final 17 points to get the SPSL South win.

The Mount Rainier Rams picked up their first win of the season Friday night over Jefferson, 23-7, at Highline Stadium.

The Raiders (2-5) couldn’t stop Ram running back Amani Brown, who racked up 33 carries for 169 yards and three touchdowns.

Decatur fell to 1-6 on the season with a 58-13 loss to Peninsula Friday night at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. The Seahawks had six different players score touchdowns during the contest.

Decatur’s two touchdowns came on a 38-yard pass from Isaiah Hatch to Kevin Young in the second quarter and an 80-yard run by Noel Maafala in the fourth quarter.

Boys golf

In a non-league match, the Decatur Gators got the best of Beamer Monday afternoon at the Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club, 77-68. Spencer Clapp earned medalist honors by shooting an even-par 36. Beamer was led by a 37 by Dax Wallat, followed by a 38 from Decatur’s Carsten Olufson. Beamer got a pair of 39s from Nate Smith and Tyler Martinez.

Volleyball

The Todd Beamer Titans remained winless in the SPSL South after getting swept by Puyallup Tuesday, 25-18, 25-13, 25-16.

The Titans (0-6 SPSL, 3-8 overall) got 10 kills from Megan Huff and 15 assists from Sophie Miller.

Kentwood beat Jefferson in SPSL North action Tuesday, 25-14, 25-11, 25-18. The loss dropped the Raiders to 0-6 in the North and 1-9 overall.

Girls soccer

The Federal Way Eagles lost their first match of the season Tuesday to the Emerald Ridge Jaguars, 1-0. The Eagles (6-1-5) couldn’t get anything going on offense and the Jaguars (7-5-1) got a goal from Kelsey Treat in the 29th minute.

The loss moves Federal Way into third place in the SPSL South. The top-five advance to the postseason.

The Todd Beamer Titans (5-4-3) remained in the playoff hunt in the SPSL with a 3-1 win over Graham-Kapowsin Tuesday night. Beamer, who currently sits in sixth place, got goals from Emily Gunderson, Emily Buehring and Jenny Hoefel.

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders (2-10-1) played a solid Kentwood team to a 0-0  tie Tuesday in SPSL North action. Kendra Wallace earned the shutout in net for the Raiders.

Decatur (1-8-0) were beaten up by Bonney Lake Tuesday night, 5-0. Madi Adams netted a hat trick for Bonney Lake (7-4-1).
