The cross country season came to an end Saturday at the state cross country championships in the Tri-Cities. Eight Federal Way school district runners made the journey across the mountains to compete at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
On the boys’ side, Federal Way senior Mitch Stewart led the way for the district with a 42nd-place performance Saturday. Stewart, who won the last two individual tennis championships, finished the 5,000-meter course in 16:12.64.
Stewart, who is headed to the University of Washington in the fall to play tennis, chose to run cross country this year instead of defending his 4A singles title.
Beamer junior Austin Jex ended up in 50th place Saturday in 16:18.32 and teammate Blake Hansen followed in 74th in 16:30.44. Federal Way senior Mussie Simon finished in 79th in 16:35.99.
The Gig Harbor boys dominated the 4A team competition at the Sun Willows Golf Course. The Tides occupied the first three places in the race with Logan Carroll winning in a time of 15:06.37. Redmond finished second and Central Valley was third.
In the 3A boys’ race, Decatur senior Kaden Lusink finished in 90th place in a time of 17:14.01.

In the 3A race, Decatur junior Emma Dalin was 103rd in a time of 21:12.03.
Girls soccer
The Federal Way Eagles fell short of the Class 4A state tournament with a 1-0 loss to Union Saturday at Art Crate Stadium at the West Central/Southwest Bi-District Tournament.
Union, the second-place team from the Greater St. Helen’s League, got an early goal by Naomi McDonald and held the powerful Federal Way offense scoreless.
McDonald scored in the 10th minute on a pass from Delany Lindhal and Mo Speith made four saves in goal for the Titans.
The Eagles (12-4-2) finished second in the South Puget Sound League South Division, qualified for the winner-to-state game with a victory over South Kitsap Thursday in the opening round of the district tournament. Federal Way got both of their goals from Gabriela Pelogi, who finished with 25 on the season.
Union will take on Moses Lake in the opening round of the 4A State Girls Soccer Tournament on Wednesday.
Girls swimming
The Decatur girls swimming and diving team will be well-represented at the Class 3A state meet, which will be held Friday and Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center.
Leading the list will be Lanie Vuong. The senior won the 100-yard butterfly Saturday at the Class 3A West Central District Championships at Lindbergh High School.
Vuong out-touched Kennedy Catholic’s Hannah Baillie in the final heat by just .07 of second. Vuong swam a 1:03.23 to Baillie’s 1:03.30.
Vuong will also be a part of the Gators’ 200 freestyle relay team, which finished in second place at the district meet. The top-four placers in each event automatically qualified for the state championships.
