Prep sports wrap: Federal Way’s Johnson, Simon impressive at Curtis Invitational; Kim earns ‘Ironwoman’

The Federal Way High School cross country teams had a pair of impressive runs Saturday at the prestigious Curtis Invitational at Titlow Park.

Jasmine Johnson finished in first place on the girls’ side and Meron Simon won the boys’ race at the 16-team invitational meet.

Johnson’s run over the hilly, 5,000-meter course was a course record and broke the old record, which was previously set by Curtis’ Erika Martin. Johnson ran a time of 19:20.29, shattering Martin’s old record of 19:32.

Simon’s time of 15:44.13 was just one-second shy of breaking the meet record on the boys’ side. The record is still held by Central Kitsap’s Shane Moskowitz, who won the Class 4A state championship last year and is currently running at Oklahoma State University.

Simon helped the Eagles finish in third place overall in the team standings, behind Puyallup and Peninsula. Brandon Thornton finished 11th overall in a time of 17:24.13 and Nathan Brewster was 20th in 17:34.58.

The Federal Way girls ended up eighth overall. Peninsula finished first overall.

For the second year in a row, Beamer senior Rachel Kim earned “Ironwoman” status. Kim swam two more automatic state-qualifying times Thursday during the Titans’ 104-80 loss to Curtis. The state times in the 500-yard freestyle and 100 breaststroke Thursday gave her qualifying times in all eight individual events contested in high school swimming.

Kim won the 500 free in a time of 5:15.36 and broke her own school record in winning the 100 breaststroke against Curtis in 1:09.23.

Kim accomplished the same “Ironwoman” status last year as a junior and swam an automatic All-American time in finishing second in the 200 individual medley and finished third in the 100 backstroke. She also helped a pair of Beamer relay teams snare two third-place finishes.
