The Federal Way High School boys and girls track teams remained unbeaten Wednesday with an impressive sweep of Todd Beamer at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. The Eagle boys beat the Titans, 93-34, and the girls won, 90-51.

On a day with several impressive performances, Federal Way freshman Tyson Penn had the most impressive of them all. The Eagle ninth-grader won the high jump with a state-best leap of 6-foot-8.

According to head coach Sam Beesley, who is a 41-year coaching veteran, Penn’s jump is the best-ever by a freshman in the state of Washington. The old record of 6-7 was held by Hanford’s Dan Coleran (1987) and Klickitat’s Paul Byron (1993).

Penn’s jump was also two inches short of the Federal Way High School record of 6-10, set by Ed Miller on 1988.

In total, the Federal Way boys won 12 of the 16 individual events against Beamer with Ezekiel McNeal, Albert Havili and Aaron Persinger each winning a pair.

McNeal won the 100 meters (11.05) and 400 (49.72), Havili won both the shot put (52-6) and discus (166-5) and Persinger won the 110 hurdles (15.07) and 300 hurdles (39.28). The 300 hurdle time is also the best in the state this year.

Federal Way’s other wins came from Tremaine Rambo in the 800 (1:58.3), Mitch Stewart won the 1600 (4:24.11), Mathias Forward won the pole vault (12-0) and Michael Tate won the long jump (23-3.5).

Beamer’s victories came from Kerson Lubin in the 200 (23.4), Austin Jex in the 3200 (10:07.4) and Adrian Shocks in the triple jump (46-8.5). They also won the 4×400 relay.

On the girls’ side, the Eagles got double wins from Ta’Mara Richey in the long jump (17-7) and triple jump (36-2.75), Luaipou Lologo in the shot put (33-4) and discus (100-5), Mariyah Vongsaveng in the 100 hurdles (15.73) and 300 hurdles (46.5) and Julian Johnson in the 800 (2:28.72) and 1600 (5:33.12).

Other Federal Way event wins came from Gabriela Pelogi in the 100 (12.93), Kayla Peterson in the 3200 (12:02.23), Audrey Shin in the high jump (5-4) and Tia Thomas in the pole vault (9-0).

Beamer’s victories came from Chante Sposter in the 200 (26.47), Emily Gunderson in the 400 (1:03.89) and the 4×400 relay.

Softball

Beamer — The Titans (10-2 overall, 8-1 SPSL South) got a huge offensive game from Halle Colson Wednesday during a 12-0 win over Bethel Wednesday. Colson, a senior, finished with a pair of home runs and was 3 for 3 with six RBIs.

Madison Rogers earned the shutout on the mound by giving up three hits and striking out seven. Rogers also finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs and a double at the plate. Megan Jewett-Chan also had a pair of RBIs for the Titans.

Jefferson — The Raiders were beaten Wednesday by the Kentridge Chargers, 2-1. Kentridge tallied two runs in the fifth inning. Jefferson’s run came in the top of the third. Lizzet Dominguez gave up just four hits to TJ on the mound.

Decatur — The Gators remained winless on the season with a 12-0 loss to Peninsula Wednesday. No other information provided.

Baseball

Jefferson — The Raiders (7-8 overall, 5-8 SPSL North) got an impressive pitching performance from junior Niko DelaCruz and beat Mount Rainier Wednesday, 2-1.

DelaCruz scattered six hits during his seven innings of work, walking just one. He improved to 3-2 on the season.

Offensively, Jefferson tallied just four hits, but scored single runs in the third and sixth innings. Nathan Baughman scored a run and knocked in a  run for the Raiders.

Beamer — The Titans gave up seven runs in the top of the first inning and fell to the Graham-Kapowsin Eagles, 10-3. Beamer (10-6 overall, 8-4 SPSL South) finished with just six hits and scored all three of its runs in the second inning.

Ben Arata finished 2 for 3 at the plate for the Titans.

Federal Way — The Eagles (1-13 overall, 0-11 SPSL South) gave up a run in the bottom of the seventh to lose to first-place Emerald Ridge Wednesday, 4-3.

Federal Way tallied two runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. Freshman Christian Jones finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs for the Eagles.
