The Emerald Ridge Jaguars took early control of the South Puget Sound League South Division girls soccer race with a 3-1 win over the Todd Beamer Titans on Thursday.
The victory improved Emerald Ridge to 2-0-0 on the year and dropped Beamer to 1-1-0. Kimmie Stueckle, Courtney Craft and Audrey Sullivan scored for the Jaguars. Tiarra Fentress had the Titans’ lone goal of the game.
Beamer won the SPSL South title last season with a 13-1-2 record and Emerald Ridge finished second at 10-2-3, and are the favorites again.
Decatur started its season with a 3-0 win over Puyallup Thursday at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. The Gators tallied all three of their goals in the second half. Abby McFaul, Rachel Markey and Rachel Niera each scored goals for Decatur, and Kayla Lipston picked up the shutout in goal.
Thomas Jefferson (1-1-0) picked up its first win of the season Thursday over the Auburn Trojans, 3-2. Lauren Jerde broke the tie in the 72nd minute with an unassisted goal. It was her second goal of the game. Jefferson’s other goal came from Kenna Friedman in the 20th minute.
Cross country
Jefferson senior Lacey Printz finished in third place in the senior girls race at the prestigious Capital Invitational in Olympia on Saturday. Printz finished with a time of 14:57. Ruby Roberts from King’s High School won the race in 14:11. Jefferson’s Monica Jaenicke finished sixth in the race in 15:07.
On the boys’ side, Jeff Baklund finished fourth in the senior race in 12:17. Gig Harbor’s Conner Peloquin won the race in 11:41.
Girls swimming
Curtis outlasted the Thomas Jefferson Raiders on Friday in a non-league meet between two of the better teams in the SPSL, 97.5-90.5.
The Raiders got a pair of individual event wins from Amber Cratsenberg in the 50-yard freestyle (25.21) and 100 free (55.41) and Savannah Coe in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.31) and 200 individual medley (2:17.26).
The Todd Beamer girls remained unbeaten on the season with a 115-70 win over Auburn Riverside in a non-league meet Thursday.
Rachel Kim swam a pair of state-qualifying times while winning the 200 individual medley in 2:09.91 and the 100 backstroke in 1:00.93.
The Titans also got wins from Michelle Rah in the 200 free (2:05.57), Kelly Erickson in the 50 free (26.20), Elizabeth Wiley in diving (191.20), Jessica Soria in the 100 butterfly in a state-qualifying time of 1:01.08 and Taylor Wintler in the 500 free (5:46.59). The Titans also won all three relay races against Auburn Riverside.
Boys and girls golf
Decatur’s Amanda Beyke earned medalist honors during Thursday’s 94-41 win over Curtis at the Meadow Park Golf Course. Beyke fired a 1-over par, 37.
The Auburn Riverside boys outlasted Jefferson, 76-74, Thursday at the Riverbend Golf Course in Kent. The Raiders’ Erik Jarvey earned medalist honors with an even-par, 36.
Boys tennis
The Todd Beamer Titans got by the Decatur Gators in a SPSL South battle Thursday, 3-2. The Titans got wins from Chase Frederick at No. 1 singles, Joseph Dela Cruz and Ryan Wolf at No. 1 doubles and Sean O’Brien and Nick Cook at No. 2 doubles. Decatur’s wins came from Darrell Belvin at No. 2 singles and Nelson Adkinson and Josh Park at No. 3 doubles.
The Jefferson boys downed Curtis in a non-league match Thursday, 4-1. The Raiders got wins from Kainoa Rosa at No. 1 singles, Michael Suh at No. 2 singles, Joe Lee and Mokoa Rosa at No. 1 doubles and Brandyn Gomez and Kyle Creek at No. 2 doubles.
