Prep sports wrap: Decatur falls to EmRidge in battle for first place in SPSL South soccer standings

The Decatur Gators just didn’t have enough for the Emerald Ridge Jaguars.

The first-place Jaguars downed the Gators Tuesday, 5-2. The win moved the Jaguars to 6-0-0 and dropped Decatur to 4-1-1 in the South Puget Sound League South Division.

Emerald Ridge rolled out to a 5-0 lead before the Gators tallied two late goals.

The Gators’ goals came from Abby McFaul on a pass from Rachel Markey in the 61st minute and Rylie Buckholz converted a penalty kick.

Beamer (5-1-0) moved into second place in the SPSL South with a 5-1 victory over Curtis Tuesday. The Titans are one game back of Emerald Ridge.

Beamer jumped all over the Vikings and led 3-0 at halftime thanks to goals from Holland Crook, Breanna Straus and Mackenzie Hickel. The Titans added two more goals in the second half from Hickel and Crook.

Beamer will take on Emerald Ridge at 3:30 p.m. at Federal Way Memorial Stadium on Friday. Emerald Ridge beat Decatur in their first matchup this season.

Federal Way won their second game of the season Tuesday with a 2-0 shutout of Jefferson. The Eagles (2-3-1) got goals from Molly Campbell and Sara Shimer. Shimer and Sam Freed also combined on the shutout in the goal for Federal Way. Jefferson fell to 2-4-1 with the loss.

Volleyball

The Todd Beamer Titans picked up a big win over the Bethel Braves Tuesday night with a three-game sweep, 25-19, 26-24, 25-20. The victory moved Beamer to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the SPSL South.

The Titans got 12 kills and seven digs from Lexie Jones and 10 kills from Samantha Williams. McKenna Grotefend chipped in four blocks and 12 digs.

The Thomas Jefferson Raiders dropped their first match of the season Tuesday to the Kentwood Conquerors, 25-7, 25-17, 25-18. The loss dropped TJ to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the SPSL North. The Raiders got 10 assists and six aces from Allie Crowe and six kills from Kendra Ansotigue.

Kentridge needed four games to beat Federal Way Tuesday, 25-7, 25-10, 21-25, 25-14. The Eagles (2-5, 0-2) got 21 digs from Kara Highberg and seven kills and three blocks from Jaleecia Roland.

Decatur (1-4, 0-1) was swept Tuesday by the Rogers Rams, 25-16, 25-10, 25-10. Christina Sessoms got five kills and three blocks and Charisma Toilolo had eight assists and three ace for the Gators.

Boys golf

Broc Johnson fired a 1-under par 35 Tuesday at the Sumner Meadows Golf Course during an 88-45 win over the Federal Way Eagles. The win improved the Titans to 5-2 on the season.

Curtis moved to 6-1 with a 64-44 win over the Decatur Gators Tuesday at Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club. The Gators were led by the 41 of Mikael Pitzer and a 44 by Lloyd Braun.

Girls golf

Jefferson moved to 6-1 in the SPSL Central Division with an 88-85 win over Auburn Riverside Tuesday at the Riverbend Golf Course. The Raiders got another medalist performance from Alexus Song, who finished with a 40. Sarah Yu followed with a 46 and Katie Seo and Johanna Moore both fired 48s.

Boys tennis

Jefferson remained unbeaten on the season (7-0) with a sweep of the Curtis Vikings Tuesday. The Raiders lost a grand total of 11 games during their five match wins.

Cross country

Beamer’s Taylor Kartes and Sara Mussa finished first and second during Tuesday’s 25-32 win over the Curtis Vikings. Kartes won the race in 20:04 and was followed closely by Mussa, who finished one second behind. Curtis swept the next three places to tighten the final score.
