It was a crazy way to start the 2011-12 basketball season for the Thomas Jefferson and Beamer boys Tuesday night.

In a game that included 57 fouls, a 19-point second-half comeback and a probable forfeit, the Titans eventually beat the Raiders in overtime, 70-66.

But the result is on hold until a group of athletic administrators around the South Puget Sound meet to discuss a most-likely forfeit by Beamer. About two minutes into the fourth quarter, the TJ coaching staff alerted officials that a Beamer kid, who had played in three quarters during the junior varsity game earlier in the night, had participated in two quarters during the varsity contest.

According to league rules, a player is only allowed to participate in four quarters during a given day.

Beamer jumped all over TJ in the first half, rolling out to a 39-22 lead heading into the locker room.

“We finally woke in the second half,” said TJ head coach Kyle Templeton. “We were in foul trouble in the first half, obviously with 57 fouls.”

The Raiders outscored Beamer, 18-3, during the third quarter to pull within two, 42-40, to start the fourth quarter thanks to the play of junior guard Daryon James. James finished with 28 points to lead TJ.

The Raiders pulled to within one point, 58-57, with 1 second left in regulation and James had a chance to win the game with two free throws. But James missed the first, before connecting on the second, sending the game into overtime.

But the Titans and junior Juwan Flowers dominated in overtime to get the win. Flowers finished with a game-high 31 points, followed by 13 from Lucious Brown and 10 from senior Thomas Rhodes.

Decatur

The Gators (1-0) knocked off the Auburn Riverside Ravens Tuesday night in their opener at Decatur, 64-55, also in overtime. Decatur outscored Auburn Riverside, 12-3, during the five-minute overtime session.

The Gators were led by 16 points from Markus Rawls, 15 from Dom Hunter and 14 from Abraham Ferrell-Logan.

Federal Way

The Eagles (0-2) were swept by two of the better Class 4A teams in the state Tuesday and Wednesday in Vancouver. The Evergreen Plainsmen downed Federal Way Tuesday, 65-50, and the Union Titans won Wednesday, 66-48.

The 10th-ranked Eagles had no answers for Evergreen bigman Caleb Dressler Tuesday. The 6-foot-10 University of Hawaii-commit finished with 28 points and 20 rebounds for the ninth-ranked Plainsmen.

Evergreen jumped to a 15-point lead in the first quarter and used a 19-5 third quarter run to build a 21-point advantage.

Federal Way was led by 13 points from Cleveland High School transfer Brayon Blake and got 10 from DeeShawn Tucker.

Wednesday, BYU-signee Jordan Chatman finished with 34 points and helped Union, who played in the state title game last year, jump out to a 25-4 lead after the first quarter.

Blake finished with 14 points for Federal Way.

Girls basketball

The Decatur Gators (1-0) got first-year head coach Alison Stephens her first win Tuesday night over Franklin Pierce, 46-37, in a non-league contest.

The Gators outscored Franklin Pierce, 39-19, during the final three quarters after falling behind, 18-7, after the first quarter. Decatur was led by 12 points from junior Marissa Wendel and 10 from A’yesia Rogers.

Gymnastics

The Todd Beamer Titans swept their opening meet of the South Puget Sound League season Wednesday over Mount Rainier, Tahoma and Rogers.

Senior Sam West led the way for Beamer by winning the all-around competition with 37.10 points. The Titans finished with 163.20 team points, followed by Mount Rainier (160.45), Tahoma (143.25) and Rogers (130.95).

West also won the vault competition with a 9.15, finished second on the bars (9.15) and floor exercise (9.7) and third on the balance beam (9.1).

Leah Freeborn was third on the all-around with 33.7 points and sophomore Kasey Johnson won the floor exercise with a 9.75.
