Zach Jacobs had everything working Wednesday afternoon.
The Decatur High School senior confused and dominated the Bonney Lake Panthers on the mound to give the Gators a 2-0 win on their home field. Jacobs finished with a complete-game, one-hitter in the South Puget Sound League 3A Division opener for both teams.
The only hit of the game was by Bonney Lake’s leadoff hitter in the first inning and was a bloop single to left centerfield. Jacobs faced only 24 batters.
“He had all his pitches working for him and kept the ball down, which turned into a lot of ground balls,” said head coach Maury Kincannon. “Zach hit his spots nicely.”
The Decatur (1-3) offense gave Jacobs all the support he would need when they clawed out a run in the bottom of the first inning when Mitchell Ciotta scored on a sacrifice fly by Brett Johnson.
The Gators added an insurance run in the fifth when Mitchell Bley walked. He advanced to second on a balk by the pitcher and to third on a past ball. He scored on a single to left field by Ciotta. Decatur finished with just five hits on the day.
Jacobs finished with six strikeouts and was also 2 for 2 at the plate. Ciotta finished 2 for 3 with an RBI for Decatur.
“It was a nice win for us and a great start for Zach,” Kincannon said.
