PAC-12 MEN’S SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Cal wins first title since 1981 over Stanford

The 2013 Pac-12 Men’s Swimming Championships ended in exciting fashion as California was crowned the 2013 Pac-12 Champion for the first time since 1981 with 825 points.

The 2013 Pac-12 Men’s Swimming Championships ended in exciting fashion as California was crowned the 2013 Pac-12 Champion for the first time since 1981 with 825 points at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way Wednesday night. Stanford finished second with 800 points and USC came in third, tallying 638.5 points.

The night started off with the 1650-yard freestyle with Stanford sophomore Drew Cosgrea being crowned the champion, swimming a time of 14:49.71. Coming in at 14:51.85, USC sophomore Cristian Quintero placed second. Danny Thompson, a freshman from Stanford, placed third, touching the wall at 15:03.39.

Stanford won its second title in as many events with the 200-yard breaststroke being won by sophomore Dave Nolan, setting a new Pac-12 meet record of 1:40.39. California freshman Jacob Pendley was the first Bear to step upon the podium for the night, placing second with a time of 1:40.45. USC senior Alex Lendrum touched in third place at a time of 1:42.39.

Vladamir Morozov earned his second individual medal of the championships with a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, setting a new Pac-12 meet record of 41.38. Stanford senior Aaron Wayne claimed second place with a time of 42.48, while USC junior Jack Wagner rounded out the top three, finishing at 43.10.

Arizona claimed its second title of the championships when sophomore Kevin Cordes won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:52.96. California took second and third place as freshman Josh Prenot finished at 1:53.63 and senior Trevor Hoyt at 1:53.76.

In the final relay and event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay, USC was crowned champion, finishing in a time of 2:48.66. Stanford placed second, touching at 2:51.18, while Arizona rounded out the top three with a time of 2:53.92.

California senior Tom Shields was crowned the 2013 Pac-12 Swimmer of the Meet after five first-place finishes and a second-place finish during the championships. He won the Pac-12 title in the 200-yard medley relay, 100-yard butterfly, 400-yard medley relay, 200-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke. In addition, he was a member of the second-place finishing 800-yard freestyle relay. The senior finished his career with a total of 16 Pac-12 titles.
