FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – California won the 200-yard medley relay and USC snatched the 800-yard freestyle relay on Sunday to kick-off the 2013 Pac-12 Men’s Swimming Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

The Golden Bears claimed the 200-yard medley relay for the sixth year in a row with a time of 1:24.42. The winning team was made up of junior Tony Cox, senior Trevor Hoyt, senior Tom Shields and junior Shayne Fleming. Stanford finished second by only .06 seconds, and Arizona rounded out the top three, touching the wall at 1:24.83.

USC was victorious in the 800-yard freestyle relay, winning in 6:16.88. It was the first time the Trojans have won this event since 2010. The relay team consisted of sophomore Chad Bobrosky, senior Alex Lendrum, senior Cristian Quintero and junior Dimitri Colupaev. The Golden Bears came in second with a time of 6:18.83. Stanford touched in third at 6:22.32.

California is sitting in first place after day one of competition with 74 points, followed closely by USC with 70 points. Stanford holds the third spot with a total of 66 points. Arizona, 62 points, and UC Santa Barbara, 54 points, rank fourth and fifth, respectively. Utah (52 points), Arizona State (50 points) and Cal Poly (44 points) are ranked sixth through eighth, respectively.

The 2013 Pac-12 Championships continue Monday, March 4 with preliminaries at 11 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. The swimming events in Day 2 are the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay.
