Everyone who watched basketball in the South Puget Sound League last season knew the North Division had more talent than the South. That point was even further solidified Saturday night when the North Division trounced the South, 129-87, at the Cloud Nine All-State Game at Auburn High School.
The game featured juniors and seniors from both divisions. The North Division team featured three players from Decatur (Michael Hale, Marcus Tibbs and Darious Walker), two from Federal Way (Cole Dickerson and Jeff Forbes) and Spencer Sydney from Jefferson. The South squad included Beamer’s Dakin Wanquist and Andrew Winton.
The Decatur threesome all scored in double figures Saturday, led by a game-high 20 points from Walker. Hale tallied 16 points and Tibbs added 15. Forbes finished with 14 and Dickerson and Sydney both chipped in six points each. Wanquist finished with seven points and Winton had five for the South.
Boys soccer
The Thomas Jefferson Raiders moved to 2-0-0 in the SPSL North with a solid 2-0 win over the defending league champion Federal Way Eagles Friday night.
The Raiders got both of their goals in the second half. Chris Miller scored on a pass from D.J. DeWaele in the 56th minute and Ernan Roman followed with the Raiders’ second goal 11 minutes later on a pass from Zeke Nistrian. Jefferson goalkeeper Brian Bosshart picked up the shutout in net.
The loss dropped Federal Way to 0-2-0 in the SPSL North and 1-3-0 overall. The Eagles won the North Division championship a season ago and finished second at the Class 4A state tournament.
Beamer, the defending two-time SPSL South champs, picked up their first division win of the season Friday with a 6-0 shutout of the Bethel Braves. The Titans (1-1-0, 2-2-0) had five different players score during the game, including a pair of goals by Alan Kim. Beamer also got goals from Ugo Okoli, Troy Peterson, John Drayer and Daniel Nam. Goalkeeper Ben Draeger picked up the shutout.
Fastpitch
Decatur shortstop Kendal Nakashima is on fire. In her last two games, the senior is 8-for-8 at the plate with a home run, three triples and six RBIs. Nakashima finished 4-for-4 Friday during an 18-8 non-league win over the Sumner Spartans at Decatur. The win moved the Gators to 2-1 on the season.
Sumner took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Decatur battled back in the bottom of the inning to tally three runs of their own, all coming on a three-run home run by Nakashima. Senior Ashleigh Vincent finished 3-for-4 and Shelly Van Wagner picked up the win on the mound.
Jefferson fell to 1-2 on the year with a 6-3 loss to Rogers Friday. Cassidy DeWaele connected on a solo home run in the third inning, but the Raiders could only muster six hits against Rogers’ pitcher Bobbi-Jo Schaapveld.
Track and Field
Federal Way and Jefferson both swept their SPSL North Division dual meets Thursday. The Federal Way boys downed Kentlake, 92-44, and the Eagle girls beat Kentlake, 98-42. The Jefferson boys beat Kentridge, 100-36, and the girls won, 96-45.
The Eagle boys got two individual wins from Andru Pulu (shot put, discus) and Jeff Forbes (200 and 400 meters). Junior Jacqie Evenson picked up three individual wins for the Federal Way girls. Evenson won the long jump (15-10), 100 hurdles (15.97) and 300 hurdles (47.03).
The Jefferson boys got two wins each from Spencer Sydney (high jump, triple jump), Trenton Pinson (100 and 200) and Jeff Baklund (800 and 1,600). The TJ girls got two individual event wins from Sofia Malamura (shot put, discus), Jennifer Wamsley (high jump, triple jump) and Molly Gebhardt (triple jump, pole vault).
