Federal Way High School’s boys basketball program added another in-district transfer recently when Todd Beamer’s all-time leading scorer, Napa Mefi, enrolled at the school.

The 5-foot-10 guard officially registered as a Federal Way High School student on April 8, according to Miguel Perez, the school’s athletic director.

Mefi is the latest in a long line of accomplished basketball players to transfer to Federal Way High School after playing for other district programs earlier in their careers.

Since the 2001 basketball season, 11 student-athletes have played varsity games at either Decatur, Jefferson or Beamer before transferring into the Federal Way High School program. Mefi is set to be the 12th.

A bulk of the transfers have moved over from Decatur, including players like Michael Hale, William Reece, Elon Langston, Jon Flood, Michael Brooks, Anwar Asadi and Trey Williams.

Mefi is the third Beamer starting player to transfer to Federal Way in the last four years. The Titans also lost a pair of varsity players in 2006, when Marques Hollins and Daniel Young transferred into the Eagle program.

Jefferson also lost a pair of players to Federal Way in 2002, when Myron Hennings and Dominique Degrate withdrew from TJ the day after the Raiders’ final game of the season.

“That’s one of the things as an administrator you want to take all the right steps to make sure everything is correct,” Perez said. “One of my goals in the last two years is to try and change the perception of Federal Way.”

All student-athletes requesting transfers must meet the eligibility requirements of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) and Federal Way Public Schools.

During Mefi’s three-year career at Beamer, he amassed a school-record 918 points. Mefi also led the Titans into the West Central District Tournament during all three seasons and the program’s first, and only, trip to the Class 4A State Boys Basketball Tournament in 2009.

Last season, as a junior, Mefi averaged 16.8 points and four rebounds a game and was the Titans’ second offensive option behind forward Kevin Davis, who is currently attending the College of Southern Idaho.

Mefi tallied double-digit points in all but two games and finished with 30 in a big district win over Mount Tahoma. The Titans eventually lost a winner-to-state, loser-out game to Kentwood, who went on to win the state title.

As a sophomore, Mefi averaged 15.1 points and chipped in 6.5 points a game during his freshman season.

The Eagles lose four starters from last year’s third-place finisher at the Class 4A tournament in seniors Cole Dickerson, Isiah Umipig, George Williams and Robert Christopher. The lone returning starter is junior wing Tyrell Lewis, who transferred to Federal Way from Mount Rainier before last season.

“We will be doing an investigation and making sure he’s living where he says he’s living and other stuff like that,” said Perez, who has been the acting AD at Federal Way for the last two years. “The coaches know that when transfers come in here, they will go through the West Central District (eligibility committee) and then it will be out of our hands and no one can accuse us of anything.”
