The Federal Way Football Club under-12 Miyahara Strikers girls soccer team won the state championship of the 2011 Sports Authority Washington Youth Soccer Recreational Cup title Saturday.
The team beat the Mukilteo Strikers in the state championship game at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, 2-0. The FWFC Strikers earned the berth in the title game with a 1-0 win over the ISC Pumas Sunday morning at Starfire.
The Recreational Cup is Washington Youth Soccer’s only state recreational tournament. Held in the late fall/winter seasons, a philosophy of player participation in a low-stress, fun filled environment is promoted to recreational players only, U-11 through U-19.
Throughout this year’s Rec Cup, the Strikers were 5-0-1.
The team includes Elise Adkisson, Deniese Baker, Larissa Caldera, Olivia Chong, Madi Combs, Isabelle Hall, Katlyne Hewlett, Tori Johnson, Michelle Kim, Morgan Kreckman, Bryn Mader, Ange Menchu-Lopez, Marissa Miyahara, Jillian Ory, Crystal Rivera, Hannah Togia, Sydney Victor and Hannah Wolf.
The team is coached by Robert Miyahara, Sydney Miyahara and Jordan Miyahara.
• In a matchup of former Federal Way High School point guards, Isiah Umipig got the better of Jeffrey Forbes. Umipig’s Cal State Fullerton team downed Forbes’ Eastern Washington Sunday in Fullerton, 91-76. Both played on Federal Way’s lone state title team in 2009.
All five Fullerton (6-3) starters scored in double figures, led by the 25 points of Umipig and a double-double by Cal transfer Omondi Amoke with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Umipig, a sophomore, made 8 of 13 shots including 6 of 9 3-pointers and had three assists and a career-high seven rebounds. Umipig is averaging 14.2 points a game for the Titans and has started all nine games.
“I have great confidence in watching Zeke (Umipig) shoot it,” said Fullerton head coach Bob Burton. “They wanted to stop D.J. Seeley (leading scorer at 16.8 ppg held to 10) and that opened things up for Umipig and Chin (17 points in the first half).”
Forbes, a junior, added 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field for Eastern (5-4), but the rest of the team made just 5-of-24 shots. Forbes is averaging 8.8 points a game and has started all nine Eastern games.
“Fullerton is a very good basketball team, obviously,” Eastern coach Jim Hayford said. “They have some real high-level transfers who were big-time recruits out of high school. They are coming together as a team and are going to be a good team in the Big West. They had some injuries early in the year, but they are right at the top of the Big West – that’s a very good league.”
• The Seattle Sounders FC will hold open tryouts on January 21-22, 2012, at the team’s training fields at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila. Tryouts will be conducted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
The tryouts are open to male soccer players ages 18 years and older. Tryouts will feature small-sided as well as 11v11 games.
Players will be assessed by members of the Sounders FC technical and coaching staffs, including Head Coach Sigi Schmid, General Manager Adrian Hanauer and Technical Director Chris Henderson. In addition, other approved assessors will oversee the tryouts including goalkeeper coaches.
“We continue to seek the best domestic and foreign talent that can help the Sounders be more successful on the pitch,” said Sounders FC Technical Director Chris Henderson. “Anytime a player has a chance to perform in front of a professional coaching staff with hopes of pursuing his lifelong dreams, it is very exciting.”
The registration cost for each player is $125.
