Children at MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital in Tacoma received a surprise visit Tuesday, July 31 from Seattle Mariners catcher Jesus Montero, pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma (fresh off a Mariners rookie record 13-strikeout performance the previous night), and the Mariner Moose.
“I’m speechless right now,” said 13-year-old Divante Scott of Federal Way, as he sat up in his hospital bed to receive an autographed baseball from Montero and Iwakuma.
The players greeted children and their parents, posed for pictures, and handed out baseballs, sports bags, Mariner Moose toys and “Get Well” photo cards.
As Montero and Iwakuma left Divante’s room to visit another patient, the teen shouted some words of encouragement.
“Keep the streak going!” he said with a smile.
At the time of the visit, the Mariners had won their past five games.
The stop at MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital was part of the 2012 Mariners Get Well Tour, presented by Holland America Line.
