Girls Soccer: Tahoma hands Beamer first loss of year in SPSL championship game; Decatur advances

If there was anytime to suffer your first loss of the season, the Todd Beamer girls soccer team picked the right time.

The ninth-ranked Titans dropped a 1-0 heart-breaker to the second-ranked Tahoma Bears Wednesday night in the South Puget Sound League championship at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. The Bears (16-1-0) advance as the league’s top seed into Saturday’s West Central/Southwest District Tournament and the Titans (10-1-6) are the SPSL’s second seed.

Beamer now enters the lose-and-you’re-season-is-done portion of their schedule. The Titans will face a familiar foe at the loser-out district game at 2 p.m. at Art Crate Stadium in Spanaway when they will take on SPSL’s eighth-seeded Puyallup Vikings with a berth into the Class 4A State Tournament on the line.

During the SPSL South regular season, Beamer downed Puyallup, 1-0, on Sept. 23 and the two teams’ tied, 1-1, on Oct. 21. The Vikings (8-4-5) lost to Mount Rainier Wednesday at the SPSL Tournament, 1-0, in a battle between the fourth-place teams from the North and South divisions.

Tahoma was just too much for the Titans during the SPSL title match Wednesday. It also didn’t help that the Bears were coming off their lone loss of the season a week ago to rival Kentwood.

Forward Cassidy Richmond tallied the only goal of the game in the 33rd minute when she took a pass from Mollie Picha and connected on a perfect shot into the corner of the goal. The score was only the fifth that the Beamer defense has given up this season in 17 matches.

But the Titans did have some chances during the match to score a goal. Beamer had the first scoring opportunity of the game in the 28th minute, when Megan Anderson’s shot careened just outside of the Tahoma goal.

The Bears will play Thomas Jefferson at 4 p.m. at Art Crate Field at Bethel High School. The Raiders are the SPSL’s 10th seed into the district tournament after losing to Emerald Ridge, 2-1, in a battle between the two fifth-place teams from the North and South.

In other SPSL Tournament action

Decatur 2, Peninsula 1: The Gators won a loser-out game at the Seamount/SPSL 3A Sub-district Tournament over Peninsula (4-10-1) Wednesday at Harry Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

The Seahawks, who finished fifth in the six-team SPSL 3A, gave Decatur (10-5-1) a scare when they tallied the first goal of the game in the 21st minute.

But the Gators, who finished second in the SPSL 3A behind Bonney Lake during the regular season, picked up the game-tying goal five minutes later from Ellie Franco and Abby McFaul tallied the go-ahead score in the 28th minute.

The victory gave Decatur the third seed from the Seamount/SPSL leagues into Saturday’s West Central/Southwest District Tournament. The Gators will take on the second-place 3A team from the Narrows League, Wilson, at 11 a.m. at Highline Stadium in Burien in a loser-out game. The winner will earn a berth into the 16-team Class 3A State Girls Soccer Tournament.

Wilson finished in second place in the Narrows League 3A behind Capital during the regular season with a 7-2-1 record.

But the Rams were beaten pretty handily during five non-league contests early in the season by teams like Bellarmine Prep, Stadium, Bonney Lake, Roosevelt and Auburn Mountainview.

In comparison, the Gators beat Auburn Mountainview in both their meetings during the SPSL 3A season and shutout Narrows 3A champ Capital, 3-0, in a non-league match.

Emerald Ridge 2, Thomas Jefferson 1: The Raiders will be the SPSL’s 10th and final seed into the West Central/Southwest District Tournament after losing to Emerald Ridge Wednesday at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. The two teams’ both finished fifth their respective divisions of the SPSL.

Emerald Ridge (9-3-5) opened the scoring with a goal from Stephanie Riley in the 14th minute. Jefferson (6-8-3) tied the game back up when Kenna Friedman took a pass from Lindsey Dahl just before halftime in the 36th minute.

But the Jaguars got the game-winner from Kimmie Stueckle in the 71st minute. Emerald Ridge will take on Bellarmine Prep and Jefferson plays Tahoma on Saturday at the West Central/Southwest District Tournament.
