Girls basketball wrap: Fourth-ranked Federal Way takes down TJ, 68-45

The Federal Way Eagles girls basketball team appears to be full-steam ahead. After losing their first two South Puget Sound League North Division games on their home court to highly-regarded Auburn Riverside and Kentwood, the Eagles are back on track.

Federal Way (5-2 overall, 3-2 in the North) won their third game in a row Friday night over district rival Thomas Jefferson at home, 68-45. The fourth-ranked Eagles entered the season as the top-ranked team in the state.

Against TJ, Federal Way got 22 points from sophomore guard Darah Huertas-Vining and 19 from junior TyShana Burgess to sink the Raiders. Jefferson (3-5, 2-4) was led by 16 points from Hannah Kiyohara and 12 from Unique Taufa’asau.

The Eagles jumped out to a 19-14 lead after the first quarter and led only 34-28 at halftime. But the third and fourth quarters is when Federal Way separated themselves, outscoring TJ, 34-17, during the second half.

The Eagles will travel to the Tri-Cities on Jan. 2 to take on Chiawana High School. The new Pasco school is currently ranked ninth in the state.

In other girls basketball action:

• The Todd Beamer Titans remained winless with a 55-39 loss to the Rogers Rams Friday night in Federal Way.

Rogers (4-1) took a 23-10 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Beamer (0-4) battled back in the second and third quarters to cut the lead to 10 points entering the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough.

The Titans were led by the 11 points of Meghan Graf. Graf was the only Titan in double figures.

• The Decatur Gators remained winless with a 40-27 loss to the Bethel Braves Friday at Decatur. The loss drops the Gators to 0-5 in the SPSL South.

Bethel (5-0) led only 11-9 after the first quarter, but extended the lead to 27-17 at halftime. The two teams then combined to score 23 points during the second half, which included only 10 by the Gators.

Decatur was led by the five points each of Denisha Green, Abby McFaul and A’yesia Rogers.
