It took a little longer than expected, but the Federal Way girls basketball team picked up their first South Puget Sound League North Division victory of the season Saturday night.
The Eagles (3-2) pounded the Kentridge Chargers at Federal Way High School, 75-22. The win moves Federal Way to 1-2 in the SPSL North. The Eagles, who came into the season as the No. 1-ranked team in the state, lost their first two league games to Auburn Riverside and Kentwood.
Federal Way jumped all over the Chargers (0-4) from the opening tip. The Eagles rolled out to a 26-3 lead after the first quarter and led 46-7 at halftime. Federal Way had a total of 10 players score at least two points during the game and were led by the 15 of junior TyShana Burgess. Tiarra Fuller finished with 12, Dyesha Belhumeur chipped in 11 and Talia Walton added 10 points for Federal Way.
The Eagles’ defense held Kentridge to single-digit points in all four quarters during Saturday’s game.
In other action:
• The Thomas Jefferson Raiders suffered a pair of tough losses last week to fall to 2-2 in the SPSL North Division. The Raiders were beaten in double overtime Thursday night by the Kentlake Falcons, 60-56, and lost to the Tahoma Bears Saturday, 67-59.
Jefferson just didn’t have enough during the second overtime session against the Kentlake Falcons.
The back-and-forth game was tied at 46-46 at the end of regulation, then tied again at 53-53 at the end of the first five-minute overtime session. But the Falcons (5-0, 3-0) outscored the Raiders, 7-3, during the second overtime to remain unbeaten.
The Raiders got 22 points from senior guard Hannah Kiyohara and 10 points each from Christina Kullberg and Unique Taufa’asau during the loss. Kentlake was led by the 23 points of Morganne Comstock, who was the only Falcon in double figures. Kentlake had eight players score at least three points.
Against Tahoma, the Raiders fell behind early and could never fully recover. The Bears took an 18-9 lead after the first quarter and led 31-24 at halftime. The Raiders cut the Tahoma lead to just two entering the fourth quarter, but the Bears outscored TJ, 22-16, during the final eight minutes of the game.
The Raiders were led by the 19 points of Unique Taufa’asau, 15 from Jada Piper and 11 from senior Hannah Kiyohara.
• The Decatur Gators remained winless on the season with losses to Emerald Ridge and Puyallup Thursday and Friday. The Gators (0-5) fell to Emerald Ridge, 68-29, and lost to Puyallup, 66-29.
Against Puyallup, the Gators were led in scoring by Chasity Smith’s 12 points. She was the lone Decatur in double figures in both games.
• The Todd Beamer Titans came close to snaring their first win of the season Saturday night against Spanaway Lake, but lost to the Sentinels 46-36 on the road.
The Titans (0-4) had a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter, before being outscored 18-7 by Spanaway Lake during the final eight minutes.
Beamer was led by the 16 points of Shyla Akins and 10 from Meghan Graf.
