The Todd Beamer Titans’ first West Central/Southwest Bi-District Tournament game ever didn’t end the way they wanted it to Tuesday night in Port Orchard.
The South Kitsap Wolves dominated most of the game and won 64-51 in the opening round of the 16-team, double-elimination tournament. The Wolves finished second in the Narrows League and the Titans earned the South Puget Sound League’s seventh seed.
Beamer (13-9) now faces a loser-out game against Vancouver’s Evergreen High School at 6 p.m. at Franklin Pierce on Friday, Feb. 18. Evergreen, the second seed from the Greater St. Helen’s League, lost to Kentwood, 58-53, Tuesday. South Kitsap (18-3) will play Kentwood Friday with a state-tournament berth to the winner.
The Wolves dominated a bulk of the game Tuesday on their home court. With the exception of an early field goal by talented Beamer freshman Megan Huff, who scored a game-high 17 points, the Titans never led.
South Kitsap took its first lead when senior guard Angela Romonsky, who finished with 12 points, hit a 3-pointer to take a 5-2 advantage.
The Wolves’ head coach Mark Lutzenhiser said his team’s ability to convert outside shots early in the game was critical.
“We hit a couple of perimeter shots that opened things up,” Lutzenhiser said.
South Kitsap’s outside shooting opened things up inside for the Wolves and Taylor Sunkel, who scored eight of her 13 points in the first quarter to give South Kistap an 18-11 edge going into the second period.
The Wolves extended their lead to 37-23 at halftime and held a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the game. Beamer trailed 56-31 entering the fourth quarter. The Titans outscored South Kitsap, 20-8, during the final eight minutes to cut into the deficit.
“We had a good third quarter, which was key to kind of put them out of it,” Lutzenhiser said. “It was too big of a hole for them to dig out of.”
Beamer, who finished fourth in the SPSL South Division, had a hard time with South Kitsap’s pressure defense. The Titans turned the ball over 26 times.
Like they have all season, the trio of Huff, Shyla Akins and Meghan Graf provided a huge chuck of Beamer’s offense Tuesday. The three combined to score 47 of the Titans’ 51 points during the game. Akins finished with 16 and Graf chipped in 14.
