Girls basketball: Federal Way continues streak; Jefferson up next

The Federal Way girls basketball team continues to roll.

The Eagles (18-4) won their eighth consecutive game Saturday afternoon when they beat the Rogers Rams, 53-44, at the South Puget Sound League Tournament at Auburn High School. The win earned Federal Way the SPSL’s third seed into the West Central District Tournament. Both the Eagles and Rams finished second in their respective SPSL divisions.

Federal Way dominated Rogers in the first half, jumping out to a 9-6 lead after the first quarter and led 24-13 at halftime.

The Eagles had three players score in double figures during the win. Senior Jacqie Evenson and sophomore TyShana Burgess both finished with 12 points and sophomore Brittany Barrington had 11 points.

The win over Rogers earns the eighth-ranked Eagles a first-round date against cross-district rival Thomas Jefferson. Federal Way will host the Raiders at 7:30 p.m. tonight. Jefferson beat Rogers Friday night to earn the SPSL’s seventh seed into the West Central District Tournament.

This will be the third time the Eagles and TJ have played this season. Federal Way swept the Raiders in their regular season meetings, beating TJ, 55-43 on Jan. 8 and 64-55 on Jan. 29. The winner will take on the winner of a game between Kentlake and Bellarmine Prep Friday night. The two losers will also play Friday.

The 16-team, double-elimination West Central District will be played through Feb. 28 with the championship game being played at Puyallup High School. The top-six finishers will advance to the Class 4A State Girls Basketball Tournament, which will be played March 4-7 inside the Tacoma Dome.

Jefferson 41, Emerald Ridge 35 (Friday)

The Raiders (14-6) earned the SPSL’s seventh seed Friday night with a six-point win over the Emerald Ridge Jaguars at Bethel High School. Jefferson finished fourth in the SPSL North and Emerald Ridge was fourth in the South Division.

The Raiders got 15 points from Unique Taufa’asau and eight from Stacy Albrecht.

Emerald Ridge (11-9) jumped out to a quick 7-5 lead after the first quarter, but the Raiders bounced back to outscore the Jaguars, 15-11, in the second quarter to take a 20-18 lead into halftime.
