The Todd Beamer girls basketball team is legit. Everybody close to the program already knew this, but the extremely young and talented Titans let the entire South Puget Sound League know Thursday night with an impressive 61-49 win over the previously unbeaten Puyallup Vikings. (SEE PHOTOS)
Beamer, who doesn’t start a senior, were never really threatened during the game against the Vikings in Federal Way. The win moved the Titans to 9-1 overall and 7-0 in the SPSL South to lead the division.
Beamer was again led by the foursome of junior Megan Huff and freshmen Nia Alexander, Quinessa Caylao-Do and Bria Rice. Alexander, the daughter of head coach Corey Alexander, led the way for the Titans with a game-high 17 points. The 6-foot-2 Huff finished with 12, Caylao-Do ended up with 14 and Rice chipped in 10. The foursome is all averaging 10 or more points on the season for Beamer.
Beamer jumped out to a 20-15 lead after the first quarter and led 34-29 at halftime. They extended the lead to eight points entering the fourth quarter.
The win over the Vikings should move Beamer into the Class 4A rankings for the first time in school history. The Titans’ lone loss on the season came in a non-leaguer to Oregon and national power, Oregon City. The Pioneers beat Beamer, 67-54, last month. Oregon City is ranked 14th in the nation by USA Today and were named the national champions three years in the row in the late 1990s. They have won 11 Oregon state titles in the last 20 years.
Jefferson — The Raiders were beaten by the Kentlake Falcons Thursday, 46-41. Jefferson (3-7 overall, 2-5 SPSL North) got 20 points from leading scorer Jada Piper and 10 from Jaylynn Piper. The Raiders led 21-11 at halftime before being outscored by 15 in the third and fourth quarters.
Christian Faith — The Eagles improved to 6-2 on the season with a 57-48 win over Puget Sound Adventist at the EX-3 Teen Center in Federal Way.
Katrice Pond led the way with 28 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. The Eagles also got a big game from Alana Christy, who had 13 points and 18 rebounds.
