Gator boys dominate Kentlake to take over first place in North

Prep sports wrap: Basketball, wrestling, swimming

The Decatur boys basketball team moved into first place in the rugged South Puget Sound League North Division with an 89-65 thrashing of the Kentlake Falcons on Tuesday.

The Gators (13-2 overall, 8-1 North) entered the night tied atop the league with Kentwood, but the Conquerors were blown out by Federal Way, leaving a three-way tie for second place between Federal Way, Kentwood and Kentridge (all 7-2) entering Friday’s games (after press time).

Decatur had five players score in double figures Tuesday against Kentlake. Senior guard Marcus Tibbs led the Gators with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting with 11 assists and eight rebounds. Cam Schilling, a 6-5 junior, had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Michael Hale had 17, Darious Walker tallied 14 and K.J. Hong had a career-high 11 points.

The Todd Beamer Titans boys basketball team continued its recent hot streak with a 55-51 win over the Rogers Rams on Tuesday. The victory was Beamer’s second in row and moved the team to 4-5 in the SPSL South and 6-9 overall. The Titans now sit in a tie for the fifth and final postseason berth from the SPSL South with Rogers, with five games remaining.

Beamer was led by the 22 points, five assists and four steals of senior guard Dakin Wanquist. Andrew Winton chipped in 18 points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

The Titans controlled the first half of play, rolling out to a 27-18 advantage after the second quarter.

Kent-Meridian picked up its first SPSL North win of the season Tuesday over Jefferson, 65-57. Xavyr Moss led the Raiders with 22 points.

Wrestling

The Decatur Gators improved to 4-1 in the SPSL North with a 41-26 win over Jefferson on Wednesday night. The Gators sit one loss behind Kentwood and Tahoma.

Decatur picked up pins from Rad Krysa at 103 pounds, Jensen Delarosa at 125, Tristan Jones at 171 and Tevyn Tillman at 285. Jefferson got a pin from Austin Meek at 112.

Beamer dropped to 3-2 in the SPSL South with a loss to unbeaten Rogers Wednesday, 46-11.

The Titans’ wins came from Cody Moriarty at 112 pounts, Trevor Simpkin at 119 and Kevin Oyer at 160.

Swimming

Todd Beamer picked up a 111-73 win over Emerald Ridge on Tuesday. The Titans got a pair of individual wins from Kyle Christensen in the 200-yard individual medley (2:09.88) and the 100 butterfly (58.06) and won all three relays.

Girls basketball

Jefferson improved to 4-5 in the SPSL North with a 56-28 win over Kent-Meridian Tuesday. The Raiders were led by the 16 points of Sofia Malamura and sophomore Hannah Kiyohara chipped in nine.

The Raiders outscored Kent-Meridian 44-15 in the final three quarters.

Decatur fell to 0-9 in the SPSL North with a 54-37 loss to Kentlake Tuesday. Sarah Quantz led the Gators with 13 points.

Rogers outscored Beamer 50-36 in the final three quarters to walk away with a 56-48 win Tuesday. The loss dropped the Titans to 2-7 in the SPSL South. Mikki Akins and Kaylah Scott led Beamer with 13 points each.

Gymnastics

Jefferson split a three-way meet Wednesday with Auburn Mountainview and Bonney Lake. Auburn Mountainview remained unbeaten with 161.35 points, followed by the Raiders (157.7) and Bonney Lake (144.35). TJ now sits 11-2 in the SPSL.

Anna Wallace finished third in the all-around with 32.25 points. Desiree Minnie ended up second in the vault (8.7) and Jennifer McCreery was second in the floor exercise (8.7).
