Football wrap: Eagles blow out Riverside; Decatur drops fourth in a row

Things didn’t start off too well for the Federal Way Eagles Friday night at Auburn Memorial Stadium.

But they certainly ended well for Federal Way.

The Eagles cruised to a 42-14 win over the Auburn Riverside Ravens to move to 3-2 in the South Puget Sound League North Division and 4-2 overall. The win advanced Federal Way into the fourth and final playoff berth from the North.

Auburn Riverside’s Keyonte Scott got the Raven’s on the scoreboard early with a 36-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. But the Eagles tallied the next 28 points to take control of the game.

Federal Way finished with 374 yards of total offense, including 312 on the ground. Eagle senior running back Trenton Pinson finished with 245 yards rushing on just 19 carries, including touchdown runs of 4 and 71 yards. Pinson also had a 37-yard touchdown catch.

Federal Way junior quarterback Nick Tanielu finished with 12 carries for 88 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Tanielu also threw for 56 yards, two interceptions and a touchdown. The Eagles also got a 1-yard touchdown run from Stanley Matau in the second quarter.

Connor Bjornstad led Auburn Riverside with 119 yards rushing on 14 carries and quarterback John Hakala added a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. The Federal Way defense also intercepted Hakala twice.

The win over Auburn Riverside sets up a huge game Thursday night against Kentwood (4-1) at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. The winner of the game will have the inside track at snaring one of the North’s playoff berths.

Federal Way’s final two SPSL North games are against a pair of winless teams. The Eagles play 0-5 Kent-Meridian Oct. 22 and 0-6 Jefferson on Oct. 29.

Kentwood 55, Jefferson 0 (Friday)

The Kentwood Conquerors thoroughly dominated the winless Thomas Jefferson Raiders Friday night at French Field. The win moved the Conquerors to 4-1 in the SPSL North.

Kentwood got touchdowns from seven different players, including two defensive scores from Quinjuan Lawson. Lawson returned an interception for a touchdown and followed that by running back a fumble for a score.

The Raiders will battle the winless Kent-Meridian Royals Friday night at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

Rogers 37, Decatur 6 (Friday)

The Gators (2-4) couldn’t get it done on their homecoming. Rogers (3-2) dominated Decatur Friday night at Federal Way Memorial Stadium. It was the Gators’ fourth loss in a row after starting the season 2-0.

The Rams rolled out to a 21-0 lead in the first half, thanks to a pair of long touchdown passes to Donovin Goode. Goode caught a 52-yarder and a 75-yarder in the first half. Bennett Bontemps also had a 3-yard touchdown run to make it 21-0.

Decatur got on the scoreboard in the second quarter when tight end J.T. Koontz caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Alex Bykovskiy. The Gators missed the two-point conversion to trail 21-6.

Rogers added two second-half touchdowns and a safety to finalize the score.

Things don’t get any easier for the Gators. Decatur travels to the third-ranked Auburn Trojans Friday night to battle the Trojans in a non-league game.

Beamer 28, Emerald Ridge 13 (Thursday)

The Todd Beamer Titans won their third game of the season with a 28-13 win over the Emerald Ridge Jaguars Thursday at Federal Way Memorial Stadium.

The win moved the Titans to 2-3 in the South Division and leaves them in sixth place in the nine-team division. Beamer also beat Auburn Riverside in a non-league game earlier in the year.
